Anyone going to Moonspell / Katatonia?

The show was awesome last night.
Got there in the middle of Daylight Dies.
I was not familiar with them before, but was impressed.
Good death / doom. Would be a good fit on a bill with Novembers Doom actually.

Then came Katatonia. They started with three tracks from the Great Cold Distance. There were serious sound problems, esp with the vocals that took away from the energy in the beginning.
Then they went into Kata-classics such as Had to Leave, Deadhouse, Criminals, Ghost of the Sun, and Teargas. They followed up with July and My Twin from the new one, and ended with Evidence. Unfortunately, they didn't do any pre-"rock" material that they had been doing on other dates. Still a great performance. Good crowd reaction as well.

I only stayed for a couple Moonspell songs. They were a lot heavier than I would have expected actually. Sounded good, but was dead tired, and dreading the drive back home.

Met Larry which was cool.

Incredible show last night, Paul & I were up in the balcony so we didn't hear any tech problems from where we were at all. Katatonia was awesome much better than when I had first seen them at metalfest years ago. Moonspell was great as usual have seen them many times, there energy level always amazes me. Hung out with the bands until 2:00 was very cool to meet Katatonia whom I've been a HUGE fan of for many years!!!!!! We have been friends with Moonspell for years & its always great to hang with our buddy Fernando. There was some costume party next door at the bar thats adjoined with the Pearl Room which was great fun who new that Mokena was so happening? I don't get many nights out so this was definitely a night to remember.

I unfortunately don't know the full sets for the show, sorry....

The show was very enjoyable. It was a pretty decent turnout, about what I'd expected and hoped for. Daylight Dies played very well and won over some new fans from what I could tell. They're very nice guys and spoke with them for awhile. Paul has known them for years but I'd never really gotten to know them. Very solid live act and I'd definitely love to play with them sometime.

Katatonia were cool, they did have some sound issues....sounded like a bad mic cable for Jonas, kept cutting out and crackling, which was a shame. Ironically they seemed like they had a muddier sound mix than Daylight Dies or the local openers Urn did. Not quite sure why that would be? Anyhow, I really enjoyed their set list, and while it would've been interesting to hear something from "Brave Murder Day", I'm one of the few who prefers their last few albums anyhow. I was really happy to hear "Viva Emptiness" songs live, as it's my favorite disc and I think those songs tend to translate really well in the live setting. You could feel that people were very excited to finally see them. Anders later actually recognized me, because of my hair LOL He was funny and he seemed pretty stoked that the show went really well. After that we mostly talked about David Coverdale and how he's a god, haha, oh well we're old school fans.

Moonspell were fantastic. They're our friends and we've always supported them, but honestly they blew me away. I always thought they were solid but they really stepped it up and, in my opinion, were more than adequate as the "headliners". Lots of energy, they focused mostly on their heavier more aggressive material. I was pleased to see that a majority of the crowd stuck around, and they received a really good response throughout the whole show. At one point Fernando was thanking the other bands on the tour, and then thanked ND by name and mentioned Paul, and said that someday they hope to finally be able to tour with us. It was a very nice and classy thing to do, especially when so many times we go to see other friend's bands and they barely even acknowledge us when passing us in the crowd. Moonspell are really decent people.
After the show a bunch of us had passes to hang out so we spent a good couple of hours drinking and bullshitting with Moonspell, Katatonia, Daylight Dies and some of our local buddies and gals who got backstage too. We had some good conversations and snapped a couple of good pics too, which hopefully we'll be able to post at some point. Overall it was an enjoyable evening and the energy of it all just makes us that much more geared up for our European tour in two weeks.

Seriously, if this tour is coming your way, check it out, and stick around for Moonspell, they're really kicking ass on this tour, as are the other bands.

Yep, great show!
I think I listed the majority of Katatonia's setlist above.
I may have missed one or two songs.

Arline - Larry did point out Paul and you to me. You guys were up in the balcony.

It was a great show indeed. Would have been a perfect fit for Novembers Doom in my opinion. As you said, maybe sometime down the road.

Larry - Funny you mentioned Coverdale. I have been on a huge Deep Purple kick lately, and just recently picked up their "Burn" CD. I was never a big Whitesnake fan, so I stayed away from the Coverdale Purple albums. Seems like I have been missing out on some great stuff. I like Coverdale fronting Purple a hell of a lot more than Whitesnake.
(Who ever thought a thread regarding a Moonspell / Katatonia gig would result in mentioning Whitesnake and Deep Purple!!)

I'll be at the Ft. Worth show next month. I'm looking forward to Katatonia, and I always love seeing Moonspell. I just hope the crowd is better than the other times I've seen them in Dallas.

Yeah, Dallas pretty much sucks no matter who's playing. My band Vex is opening the San Antonio show on November 11. I'm predicting a large turnout since that's about as close to Mexico as the tour will get. Should be fun.

The crowd in Austin vs. the Dallas crowd was a world of difference the last time I saw Moonspell. I felt bad for them when they were here, up at the front were myself and maybe 10 other old people. By old I mean over 21, seems the metal show crowds are made up of mostly teenagers acting like assholes and trying to get the old farts to buy them beer.

I mentioned this here before a while back... Moonspell is seriously one of the best live acts out there. I haven't really liked their studio-recorded releases since Irreligious (that's quite a long time ago), but I saw them 3 years ago in Chicago and songs I would skip over on their CDs were fucking brutal and loud when they played on stage. Easily one of heavy metal's most underrated live bands.

Someone here *cough* has a bootleg vid of that concert. You should ask Fernando if you can sell me a copy (I'll sign my soul and car away as collateral against distrubiting copies of it or something).

Does anyone know if Katatonia played "Wealth" or not? I've heard that is an amazing song live. I assume Moonspell played a lot off Memorial. Finisterra would be an awesome live song I think.

Not in Mokena

That sounds really posh. Or romantic, or something. :p[/QUOTE

Aw you are so sweet!!!!!!!!! Seriously though the balcony is the place to be, to get away from the idiots moshing. Paul & I usually stand in the back at shows to be away from all that. So at shows if you can get up to the balcony thats probably the best seat in the house, comfort, visually etc. I have never understood moshing, why can't people just go to a show without getting all shit faced & idiotic & ruin it for everybody. A few years ago when ND played at the New England Fest? We were all in the balcony & thank God cause I have never seen a pit like the one that KillSwitch Engage had. OMG it was totally out of control. I know Lar, Paul & Vito remember that one. I mean if I really think I might come into some real physical harm what the hell is the point in going to see these bands play? Just not cool to envade others personal space imo.:(
