Clue's in the question, we're just starting out but we're ambitious. You providing songs for local radio etc? paying to play or taking on tickets and basing your earnings on selling them? what's going on with you to make money from your shows?

Ok, step one. Get a CD with at least 8 songs. Make two or three of them covers, but have the rest originals. Make sure you have at least one cover, this shows the listener what kind of music you are and what they can expect from your CD. Making CD's is simple, look it up on the web and you will get step by step info.
Next, talk to your local stores and small businesses and ask them to place you CD's somewhere in the store where they are willing to sell them. At the moment, don't worry about making a lot of money. Hell, if it comes down to it, tell the owner that he can keep the profit. You may walk out of that store with no money, but your name and your music is starting to get out there.
Start playing bars and clubs. Very easy way to get your names out there. And a bunch of drunks wont really care about how you sound. As long as it is catchy or hardcore they will be into it. And who knows, you may be given free booze outta the deal.
After a while, make a radio friendly song. This means a song that isn't super head bang. Something more mellow, but catchy. Don't make it to intense or complicated. Keep the lyrics clean and meaningful. The easiest way is to write a love song. Those are almost golden. Then, go talk to your local radio station. Ask them to play your song. If they don't, continue getting credibility from selling your CD's and try again every week or two.
Once you get airplay, things will change. Bars will be asking for you to play, take every gig you can! I can't stress that enough. Then, start talking to some small bands that go on tour, or want to go on tour, but they always open for someone. Tell them that you will open for them. They will jump at the idea of being the main attraction, and once again, your name and fame is getting known.
After doing some of these, you will be making money. Other hints I can give you are, try and get merchandise, T-Shirts, Posters, Hats, ect.
Good luck to you, and keep the music alive. I hope I have helped.

you've been great! plenty to dissect. we already have our radio friendly song, it's the same name as the band. what we don't have is the full band recording yet, though the only thing fake on our discs is the drum machine. still enough that we're giving them away.

Awesome! My band is in the same area as you, we just did a lot of marketing research. Make sure you get T-Shirts done, that is a huge part, and a great feeling to see people wearing your name. Which is your bands name anyway? I'll keep a look out for it.

We are Chains of Freedom, right in the name. And awesome, sounds like a good time. Good luck to you in the future. I'll hope to see your name in lights some day.

I wouldn't waste money on Tshirts. The odds of anyone wanting one is pretty slim (no offense). The same goes for other "products".

Your band will also spend thousands on a CD (if not then it will suck) and are unlikely to make the money back.

If you want to make money, be a cover band doing what's popular. You'll have little cost and will actually be paid to perform.

Cover band = make money
Original band = spend money

Sad but true :heh:

thanks for the advice, but i don't want to be in a cover band as it's being creative, and the appreciation i get from people for the music that i'm writing and sharing, that give me pleasure in playing on-stage.

t-shirts aren't a bad idea if the music's up to scratch. we're going in the right direction in this regard. they also help get a band's name out there, since it's a good advertisement when it's worn. at the moment we're looking at stickers. our recordings at this point are not going to be amazing quality, we're doing them ourselves with our own recording gear, no need to spend thousands on anything right now, we don't have a fanbase yet.
