Anyone like Carpathian Forest?

Not super keen on CF. For BM, Immortal are by far my favourite band. Nothing in the whole field can top, or even come close to the classic epic stylings of "At the Heart of Winter".
Emperor were ok, and Mayhem were great too. I actually like COF (yeah, I know, I'm a fag etc etc) and some Dimmu too. I just can't get along with a lot of the lo-fi Uber-grim shit, like Darkthrone. It just sounds like some sulky Norwegians playing rubbish Celtic Frost cover versions in a tin shed without a bass player to me.

Love black metal, kind of middle-of-the-road on Carpathian Forest. There's FAR superior black metal out there, that's for sure.
I do really like the "Black Shining Leather" album, though.

I'm just not a big fan of black metal at all. The bands I do like are the odd exception. Maybe its the anti-elitist in me, but online forums are full of people bragging over which Ukranian split release tape is better than whic Austrian NSBM band, both of which, when sampled, sound like the ramblings of an 18 year old popeye impersonator playing the banjo. Badly.
That being said, I don't doubt there's alot of good stuff out there. I really REALLY like ATHOW era and after Immortal, but just can't find any comparable bands. I wish there was another Immortal album...any recommendations ?

I think Venom kinda comes with the package. If you like black metal, you like Venom( I do really like their music). Like you said, Venom sounds a lot like Motorhead which isn't black metal at all.

You might want to try either "Blizzard Beasts" or "Battles in the North," but since you're pretty much saying you dislike the blasting/all-speed/grim stuff, they might not be up your alley.
Have you ever checked out the bands that blend black & death metal, a la Dissection? Might be more to your liking.

Yeah Jersey, I have the entire back catalogue of Immortal. Prefer the latter stuff, though the 2nd half of battles in the north is awesome.
Yeah, I'm digging Dissection and The Chasm. I just want more icy chilly thrashy epic black metal from badly dressed Norwegians.
Bah, let's hope "I" isn't utter shit.
