Fucking terrible. The music was OBNOXIOUSLY unsubtle. Something would cross in front of the screen while someone was looking out a peephole or something and the music would have the loudest bang/clang/bass thump imaginable in an attempt to make it "scarier". Now i'm a music guy, and i truly think people react to the music of a movie moreso than the scenes a lot of times, but this was just PATHETIC. It was like the composer was being entirely "cheap", generic, and predictable in his methods. Furthermore, the character development was non existant, the movie went nowhere, and ended nowhere. It was the farthest thing from scary, and a complete waste of time. The mutants weren't scary either, and the film was anything BUT subtle. Hollywood is notoriously terrible for completely lacking genuinely "creepy" atmosphere and instead go for the cheap shot "jump" scenes. At least some of those japanese film makers have it figured out.
