So in the new as I lay dying studio updates we see Adam d using like 6 or 8 aka c414's on the drum kit

Anyone have anymore info?

Here's the video... (ignore the 421's in the beginning)

super great mics!!!!
they sound fantastic for room(stereo pair smashed with a comp), guitar(high gain....mics like one meter away from the cab, pointing straight in the middle of the 4 speakers)

And apparently as Tom mics as seen here. I think it's time I have condensers on the whole kit, except for the snare and kick haha.

I've had 414's on toms before. It's cool. The attack is super sharp and the low end extension is nice. The side address makes them pretty easy to place although bleed can be a concern. That said, the bleed is very different sounding. The biggest hindrances are cost of course and the fact that you get a lot more extraneous noises and movements (not such a big deal if you're stripping out the tracks).

I feel like Adam is sampling the kit and replacing, because to me it seems the bleed would be insanely difficult to work with. Unless the drums are being hit like champs, aka hard as fuck.

yeah. I've just edited an album where the toms were miced with condensors.
Sounded good but it was spill city.

a small condenser combined with an sm57/i5 is amazing on snares!!!

some folks using an u87 in front of the kick:)

In my small experience was the mic pre more significant for the tom sound then the mic.....last time I used an api with some e604 and the sound of the toms were amazing....

C414 is probably the most versatile mic I've used. It works pretty well (or at least just ok) on almost everything. I prefer using it as room mic (a pair of them) in a figure 8 pattern. HUGE sound. I also use it for vocals, guitar cabs, bass, bottom of the snare. You will never be wrong with this mic.

might want to check out the beta 98. it sounds great on toms and is super small and makes for easy placement while tracking. plus the shock mounts actually work so they can be clamped right on the drum... I got em because I was tired of drummers whining about having to raise their cymbals up so a 421 would fit;-)

It would be sweet if you did a shoot out haha

But yeah I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip.

I've taped a 451 to a 57 (so they are coincident i.e. no phase issues). The 451 gives you a much faster, sharper transient than the 57 which is cool to mix in. It basically gives you the snap you have to eq into a 57 right off the bat.
I've also really liked the beta87 on snare before and those can take a hit a lot better than most condensors.

Are you talking about using both at the same time?

If so, what is the placement arrangement?

Yes both at the same time.

Place them side by side with both capsules in line w/ each other as best you can. And like I mentioned before you'll obviously want to place them so that the LDC is picking up as little of the hi-hats as possible.

You may not have the room to do this on every drum kit, but next time you do give it a try.
