AT VANCE THE EVIL IN YOU
AFM Records - 2003
By Rodrigo Escandon
Wonderful! Just what we all needed: another average power metal album as if there were not enough of those albums around. The Evil in You is the latest and fifth album by the German outfit At Vance. This is actually the first time that I have listened to one of their albums so I have no idea how it compares to their previous works but if this album is any indication of what they have done in the past I will seriously avoid those. Well in all honesty, this album does not make me want and go check out the rest of their catalogue.
The main issue I have with power metal now-a-days is the simple fact that a band really has to outshine, outclass and totally standout for me to be interested in them. If I hear anything that may resemble other bands or songs then that album immediately becomes average. It may not be fair to the bands but with such a glut that was pushed by labels trying to capitalize in its popularity, one has to really be critical of releases and demand bands to make music that is imaginative, exciting and fresh and At Vance does none of those.
Some mid-tempo numbers such as The Evil In You" plods along with its slow pace and the faster tracks like Fallen Angel and One Million Miles , while they are all jacked up with snazzy solos, fast double-bass and catchy vocal melodies, just do nothing to garner another listen.
If you are still interested in this album, I suggest that you get some song samples and then still be wary of the purchase. There is no reason that we as fans and consumers should continue to accept this type of mediocrity from the bands and the labels that pushes them. Oh and once again, this release gets negative points for having the promo copy be one long track. I dont care if the label is trying their hardest to avoid piracy, this is just annoying!
