Atavism Atavism
Divinus Solitudo DS-01 3 June 2006

As some of you may know, we have quite a backlog at Ultimate Metal. As a result, sometimes albums get lost on the shuffle. This is one of them. Atavism was a small time black metal band who released a self titled 4 track MCD that was only limited to 50 copies. I say was, because they have since split. So, for the guys in the band, I apologize for the late review, but here it is.
I can sum this debut up in just one line: generic low-fi black metal. This is certainly raw, in a way similar to early Burzum. The riffs border on sloppy, specifically in the first track Odium. But I have a feeling that Odium was recorded earlier than the rest of the tracks. The sound quality is way different (worse) and the song writing also seemed weaker. A noble first effort, but pretty bad. The rest of the songs are obviously better thought out and performed well, but pretty bland to my ears.
Ive never really understood the under produced motif, so I just cant get excited over this. But if you like raw and truly underground black metal, you may want to try and get your hands on this. Good luck trying to find it.
