i mean maxing out my credit cards on a shit ton of cds, concert tickets, food, and whatever other random shit i used to buy in college on my credit cards because i had no cash and making late payments and going delinquent on a couple.

how bad are late payments in terms of your credit record? i mean, i missed a payment in January of my freshman year because I was home for a month and didn't get the bill, and they shut off my card. but since 1996, i've been late on a couple, but just by a day or two when the mail didn't go through. do those really matter, or just the serious shut-off-your-card one?

i was pretty responsible with my CC. i always paid off whatever i charged right away, and by 2002 i was riding only $500, the most ever on the card, all from a plane ticket to Italy.

i still haven't gone above $1600 or so in CC debt, paying $500 a month or so on the card. my credit record had better not be spoiled by the times that Fetus threw away my credit-card bill so it ended up getting paid 3 or 4 days late.

alex you are probably ok. i mean late payments can stay on your credit report for a maximum of seven years but if you were responsible with paying them back then you probably won't get into too much shit for that and probably have decently good credit.

i was terrible on both counts and messed up each part bad and it has ruined my credit report greatly. i am trying to take steps to fix it though the last two years and i figure by the time my car loan is paid off it will be repaired pretty well.

right now i have an outstanding CC debt of $4416 which honestly isn't too terrible compared to other people and so far i am on debt management pretty successfully and i pay my other two credit cards on time every month. its just all the stupid things i did in my early 20's that are coming back to haunt me now because they are still on my credit report.

the source of this thread was that i tried applying for a debt consolidation loan last night that would clear up all my credit cards and also be a set payment schedule where it would definitely be paid off in four years and i got declined because my credit sucks.

its like i can't friggin win!

You are better asking for a loan at your bank to pay off those credit cards than go to a debt consolidation place. Sure they will burn you with high interest but it shouldn't be as high as the CC.

i don't want to pay for a credit report. i think you can get them for free from some places, though.

greg, exactly what do you mean about fucking up? like, you went MONTHS without making a payment?

for anyone interested: if you read the fine print you sign when you get a credit card, most state that your apr will increase to the max if you are late on ANY reported bills. this can even be your electric bill. a bad debt lasts for 20 years also. AND, late payments and delinquent accounts will be on your credit for that long unless you pay up.

ohhh yeah you know actually toby ruined my credit in 2000. we lived together and i moved to philly on august 8th or something and he stayed in my apartment until the end of the month and eight months later i got all this notice about unpaid phone bills in my name from 8/14 onward! and i would have totally paid it if i had gotten the bill in the first place!

maybe not toby's fault, but he's getting the blame anyway because it was all HIS charges.

well, you should at least contact experian / transunion to see what your credit rating is. i'm sure one defaulted bill isn't bad as long as it's paid now?

I got hassled for months by the power company because they sent me a 1200$ bill and I said that I would not pay it until I received a complete copy of the power consumption for those months (I actually forgot to pay one bill, one got lost in the mail and then I moved). I was on a budget power plan that adjusts your monthly bill so that it is the same for the whole year instead of amazingly high in winter and amazingly low in the summer, and when I cancelled my account it all came crashing down on me. I paid but I hope these fuckers didn't let that show on my credit or heads will roll...
