OGDEN -- An Ogden woman accused of killing her infant son is competent to stand trial.
According to the Standard Examiner, mental health professionals who examined Jewell Hendricks, 25, told 2nd District Judge Michael DiReda on Thursday she is able to understand the charges against her and aid in her defense. However, her lawyers say that does not mean mental health issues did not play a part in her actions.
Prosecutors say Hendricks admitted to smothering her 2-month-old son Robert because he would not stop crying. Earlier court documents state she admitted to wrapping the baby in a sleeping bag and then "bear hugging" him until he stopped crying Jan. 24.
A preliminary hearing is set for April 21. Hendricks is being held in jail on $250,000 bail.
