NEWS - Late Who Bassist Memorabilia Auction Raises $1.6 Million

(5/16/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- An auction of instruments and other items owned by the late Who bassist John Entwistle raised more than $1.6 million at auction this week in London. The total was more than twice what Sotheby's auction house anticipated for the 350-lot collection.
The highest bid, $152,000, was paid for a rare Gibson Explorer guitar, which Entwistle bought for $3,730 in 1975.
Entwistle's favorite, a pink Fender Precision bass, made from the remnants of five smashed instruments and nicknamed Frankenstein, went for $100,400, according to AP. That was about nine times more than the expected price, which was $11,300.
An Alembic bass that Entwistle frequently played was also auctioned off for $60,650.
All of the money raised from the sale will go to Entwistle's estate.
Entwistle died from a heart attack at age 57 last June in Las Vegas, on the eve of the Who's 2002 summer tour of North America. The Who continued the tour with Pino Palladino filling in for Entwistle.
