Gene Simmons has resurrected Simmons Records; the premier release on his imprint through Sanctuary Records is BAG. There’s been some buzz about this fellow, he helped Simmons out on his solo record. BAG has been compared to Beck and Bob Dylan, not vocally , but as a lyricist and writer. Keep in mind the comparison was made by the pr people at the label. One thing is for certain that this is one complex record, not in terms musicianship, but in the diversity that BAG brings to the table. The record opens up with a hip-hop influenced “Uh,Uh,Uh,Uh” then there’s funky “Pavement,” and Weird AL meets Pee Wee Herman “Aye Mi Amore(I’m so fucking horny).” Clearly BAG was given free reign of the record, he plays(?) and sings(?) throughout the entire record, I found BAG to have more in common with a Frank Zappa or a Mike Patton in the writing department than a Bob Dylan. BAG is more of novelty act than an ground breaking artist that will be around a decade from now. There are some funny moments in tracks “I Can’t Stand Your Face,” “I Hate You Baby,” “Aye Mi Amore(I’m so fucking horny),” and the most accessible or contemporary are “Wasted,“ “Afterlife,“ and the Simmons co-written “Starlight.“ I will give Simmons and BAG credit, it takes a set to release this for public consumption. BAG has some sort of accent, fake or authentic who knows? To me it sounds like someone trying to sounds like he’s French, it‘s forced. It will be interesting how this will all play out. Does the world need an act like this around? Who knows? The guy that wears the KFC bucket on his head might need a gig too?
