Bands like Vinterland, Sacramentum, Dissection?

Unanimated. Much closer to the Dissection sound than the Sacramentum sound though.

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, but Unanimated are melodic death metal fyi. As for recommendations the only band I can't think of right now is Astriaal

How the fuck has DAWN not been mentioned? Get anything and everything you can find by them, most notably Nær Solen Gar Nider For Evogher and Sorgh på Svarte Vingar Fløgh. This is exactly what you're looking for, and probably the best band that ever played the style next to Sacramentum and their magnificent debut.

Another that can't be stressed enough is Throne of Ahaz - Nifelheim. Although much more on the raw BM side, it's pretty much the father of all Swedish Melodic Black Metal. On Twilight Enthroned is also worth checking out.

Unanimated's Ancient God of Evil, although certainly more on the Death Metal end of the spectrum, will also surely appeal to you. A must.

Another must is Cardinal Sin's Spiteful Intents. It features John Zwetsloot, the guitarist from The Somberlain, and is essentially a continuation of the style.

Try all of these as well:

The Abyss - The Other Side
Decameron - ...My Shadow
Lord Belial - Enter the Moonlight Gate
Mork Gryning - Tusen Ar Har Gatt
Setherial - Nord
Sorhin - I Det Glimrande Mörkrets Djup
Swordmaster - Wraths of Time
The Black - The Priest of Satan
The Moaning - Blood From Stone

this has been done to death. these are two albums and EP you need, but are always ignored:

Hirilorn - Legends of Evil and Eternal Death
Sad Legend - Sad Legend
Sad Legend - Searching for Hope in Utter Darkness

I remember a few ec-Dissection guys went on to form a band called Soulreaper (yes taken from the Dissection song). I think they sounded alot like Dissection but its been a really long time since I heard anythng from them.

My name is Christopher and I approve this post.

Seconded. I guess I should check out Sad Legend.

As far as Soulreaper goes, there's a definite influence from Dissection, but they're pretty much straight up Death Metal.

Thats the second time you say that but in reality Dissection is pretty much melodic death metal as well. I agree it has a black metal feel to it but the riffs are often in the borderline area between the genres. They also incorporated quite abit of traditional heavy metal influence.

i don't think FAFTS is an easy album to 'get' for some people, but it's SO GREAT once you do. naturally i recommend giving them 100 more chances 'til they click

I have FAFTS and i do think Fogs Kiss is a great song, i also like in some of the other songs when they do this disharmonic thing, but the thing that ruins it for me is that i think it lacks flow, and i'm always bothered by the drumming that often feels too random. Maybe it hasn't clicked with me because i haven't listened to it a lot even though i've had it for many years. Maybe i'll try again sometime in the future.
