Hi, my first post here.
I've really gotten to like those metal songs that feature a bit of "odd" drumming/instruments. Not really sure how to express it.
I will give a sample of songs, then hopefully you will get an idea of what I mean:Spin:

Static X - Structural Defect, This Is Not, I Am
Coal Chamber - Fiend
Finntroll - Födosagan
Sepultura - Ratamahatta
Eluveitie - Tegernakô
Waylander - Born To The Fight
System of a Down - Fuck The System
RatM - Vietnow, Guerilla Radio
Turisas - Rasputin
Alestorm - No Quarter

It's sorta those songs that have a really unique feeling to them I'm looking for. I hope this was comprehensible for somone;)
Please tell me some other "similar" songs!

Sorry to be an asshole man but all those bands are rubbish,if it's drumming you're interested in then check out Morbid Angel(Pete Sandoval) or Revenge/Conqueror (James Read). Both of whom pretty much make all of the above look like idiots.

Sorry, but I think you missed the point. I'm not looking for the bands with the "best" drummers or artists. I'm looking for those who stands out in a different way, those who gets a more unique sound. I don't know if you have listened to those songs I listed, but, at least in my ears, they sound quite a bit different from most of the other bands out there. I'll accept that they might not be the most artistically proficient bands, but still those songs I listed I feel as though they have "something" special about them:p
What songs will you recommend by those bands you listed? I've listened a bit to Morbid Angel, but it's quite a long time since now.

not similar to anything on your list (most similar to Eluvetie/Finntroll/Turisas/etc. due to the folk, symphonic, and ethnic elements) but check out Balkandji. they often don't stick to 4/4, often use the gorgeous woodwind called the 'kaval', and have a mix of quite interesting vocals.

Tenochtitlan is another unique band, similarly having middle-eastern influences and a variety of vocals. they also have industrial influences that contrast well with the ethnic elements. Like Eluvetie's Evocation album, their Tezcatl is a soundscape collection more than just a 'conventional song'-after-song album.

Aramazd is another one with a unique sound, drum-and-bass meets metal with a strong Arabic melodic lead.

Kerbenok are also pretty interesting for Black Metal (it's not exactly Deathspell Omega, but, ya know...)

I guess Eric Langois (Cryptopsy) playing slap bass in death metal is pretty unique.

Also Sigh (especially on the album Imaginary Soniscape) can get pretty creative.

Great, thanks for the list Seditious. I'll be sure to check them out, sounds very exciting. Have listened a little to Tenochtitlan now, I really like the instruments, but the vocals need a little getting used to I guess:)
Got any other folk metal bands to recommend? I thought I had just about heard all folk bands that there is, but I didn't recognize any from your list:)

Rasputin is awesome when you're drunk

on topic, i really like Reinert's drumming in Cynic albums. First one that came to my mind, he's got a quite different sound.

sure.
is there anything you can tell me to help guide me in what to select, what facets to look for (favorite instruments, regional styles, languages), point out (production style), warn about (unusual vocals, annoying instruments), etc.?

Don't be a bumpkin, Turisas is some epic folk-ing metal.

Seditious is in the hauuuuuuuuuuuuus!

Sorry I never replied to your message man, I'm not a huge Skiltron fan. I might give their new one a go at some point. Actually, I haven't listened to anything by them in a long time.

To the OP:

For awesome folk metal with good drumming (and everything else, for that matter) check out Suidakra.

I wasn't even a microscopic Skiltron fan :)
sometimes new albums are big improvements, sometimes they're big disappointments, sometimes they're pretty much the same but you haven't heard the band in so long that you're now impressed with something you once weren't...that's pretty much the only reason I keep checking out new albums of bands I don't really like.

Thanks for all the suggestions, got lots of stuff to check out now:D
Seditious, when it comes to folk metal I enjoy those with a strong emphasis on the folk instruments, ie they have the leading part. Bands like Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, Waylander. I prefer english/norwegian/swedish laguage;) Just hit me with some of your favourites, always fun to listen to some new bands!
