I didn't really listen to metal until like grade 8 thats when I was so different from people in my school because everyone listened to rap.

Nickleback(please don't kill me)
Incubus
Creed
Sugar Ray

Yeah um.....

Avenged Sevenfold
Coheed & Cambria
Hawthorne Heights (eek)
Nirvana
Incubus
System Of A Down
Unearth
As I Lay Dying
Atreyu
Taking Back Sunday
Slapnut (I purposely spelled it that way ;) )
Underoath
the list goes on and on, and this was only a year ago.

lol Dude I used to listen to stuff like that all the time. Before I got my (second) computerm I always listened to stuff that was on the radio. I'll list some old-school used to be favorites ...

Limp Bizkit
Korn
Linkin Park
Godsmack
Staind

Edit** I guess I'll list some more recent bands too ... I still listen to some of this stuff though, but I'll add the stuff I DO listen to cause it helped me get into heavier stuff.

Avenged Sevenfold
Atreyu
Trivium
A Dozen Furies
Chimaira
Coheed and Cambria
Misfits
AFI

That's basically all I listened to around the end of last year.

Before I listened to metal I have to admitt I was pretty close minded when it came to music.

I mostly listened to punk bands such as:

NOFX
Circle Jerks
Agent Orange
AFI
Anti-Flag
Rancid
H20
GBH
Pennywise
Dead Kennedy's
stuff like that..

Other stuff:
Jeff Buckley
Tool
Supergrass
Incubus (older stuff)
Smashing Pumpkins
311 (early days)
Alice in Chains
Primus
etc.

I didn't listen to much metal because all I knew was nu-metal (which I didn't really care for) and some heavy metal. Opeth is how I came across extreme metal and that hooked me.

I listened to a lot of those punk bands alongside metal in the 80's and 90's
shit i still do.
But before i started to listen to metal i used to listen to stuff like Creedence
Clearwater Revival, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, old country music like hank sr.,
Charlie Rich, Kenny Rogers and so on.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, the Animals, Santana, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sex Pistols, Ratm, the Clash, Stone Temple Pilots, Guns n Roses, Motley Crue

I'd say those are the big ones all which are still personal favorites but I do realize now Kurt Cobain wasn't as good as once thought, the music is still awesome though.

I can honestly say the first music I was exposed to as a child was metal. Mainly Iron Maiden, Slayer, Mercyful Fate, and so forth. The more modern and extreme stuff I found around the age of 18 when I bought a Morbid Angel album, which led to more Death, then Black metal, and now I'm discovering progressive and power metal...all good stuff.

Just a question... why can't you continue to listen to bands that you listened to before getting into metal? Does being a fan of metal preclude you from liking other types of music?

Trapt
Incubus
Deftones

Good point. I still listen to some of the artists I listed (such as Tool and Jeff Buckley), it's mostly the punk (with the exception of some old-school punk) I don't listen to anymore. After a while it just got kind of old to me.

I like Coheed again now.
