Bass dudes: Mesa 610 or Ampeg 810

A lot of people think I'm crazy, but I think 6x10's, while being more practical, sound a LOT better than 8x10's.

810 all the way. Better design, more options for running, more of a match for the wattage of the SVT4. And most likely the sound you are looking for. And unless you are gigging every weekend, moving the 810 is really not that big of a deal. It's heavy, but it's got wheels for a reason

The Mesa is going to have a much heavier tight low end. I've owned both as well as everything else under the sun and my favorites are the Mesa and Fenders (which I currently play).

Do not overlook Eden Bass gear, their cabinets are amazing. Seriously massive output and really tight low-mids / low lows. From a tone perspective, in my opinion you'd be better off with a 4x10 + 1x15 or something. I've never heard an Ampeg 8x10 sound good live, just to much massive low end.

No one makes an 8x10 that sounds like the ampeg. This can be good or bad but they're quite mid-focused. Personally I like a higher fidelity cab. I can turn off the horn and roll up the mids if I want.

edit: That's weird Tempe. Both in that I think they sound good for what they are and b/c "bass heavy" is never how I would describe them. The ampeg has the least low end extension of any 8x10 I've played.

Indeed, the Eden stuff is pretty cool

I'd be willing to bet that the road ready mesa is nearly as heavy as the ampeg.
Edit:
In fact:
mesa road ready 6x10: 152lbs
ampeg 8x10: 165lbs shipping/ 140lbs handling (actual?)

It looks like the mesa may be heavier depending on what the two weights listed on the ampeg site mean. I believe the shipping weight is accounting for UPS's "dimensional weight" or whatever and 140 is the real deal but just don't know for sure.

I'd probably go with the mesa based on my tone preference but I just thought it was worth noting that the weight is probably not an advantage.
