BENEDICTION - ORGANIZED CHAOS
Nuclear Blast - 2001

Organized Chaos is the first time I have ever heard of Benediction. I hadn’t even heard them being mentioned in any death metal discussions. This led me to believe that they are an extremely cult band but they have played with bands like Hypocrisy and even made an appearance at the Wacken festival in 1998. So Benediction is a totally new band for me with no preconceptions about them.

The first thing that struck me is that this album was produced by Andy Sneap who produced Nevermore’s last album. Dead Heart in a Dead World has a huge, crisp and clear sound but Organized Chaos has a muddy and not very clear sound to it. Compared with other albums I have to raise the volume louder in my stereo to get the same sort of sound I would get from other albums like Dead Heart in a Dead World. This is a big negative because it minimizes the overall intensity of the music. This might be an uncompromising death metal release but you couldn’t tell from the mix. But that might have been a blessing in disguise because the music isn’t that great either.

Its a weird problem I have with the music of Organized Chaos. I feel that the longer songs are just too long and that the short songs are too short and almost pointless. There isn’t a song in here that satisfies me with the length. Could it be because the music is just not appealing? At times I find that the songs are just too repetitive and it’s hard to distinguish one song from the other. Then there are slow moments like in "Stigmata" that just don’t fit or shouldn’t have been put there. The song is moving along nicely and then it slows down and I just stop caring for it. Also this is the first album with new vocalist Dave Hunt, who is a virtual unknown, and he should have stayed that way. I have no idea how he compares to Benediction’s older vocalists but all I can say that he sounds like a hardcore wannabe. Why the hell is he singing on a death metal band? In "Diary of a Killer" he just sounds pretty terrible and it makes me wonder who said, "That’s it! This is the guy!" I just don’t get it.

If mediocre death metal with bad production and terrible vocals is what you are looking for then you are in luck because Benediction has the album just for you.
