I need one really quick.

And when I mean cheap I mean cheap! something < 200€

Have you guys ever bought one that was ok and did the job?

Dean, Ibanez, Squier, etc...

I have a silvertone that was around $135 and it sounds pretty nice, I swaped the pickup out for a seymourduncan of sometype i forget wich model but now it sounds damn fine for anything i do myself, plays quiet ok too

NO.

What you guys should check out are Brice basses. JBroll has one and it sounds pretty damn good, looks KILLER to boot. He brought his when we jammed a couple of weeks ago. His is the 6-string version of this. I've already started putting money aside to buy the 5-string version. $269US.

Whoo, that looks hot. Never heard of them in Germany.
I have an Ibanez GSR200 (I bought it just to write bass-lines for our bassist and to lay down some basslines here and there). Surprisingly it really plays great - soundwise it's okay, too (no excessive hum). Never expected it to be that good.

I used to have a GSR300 that I gave to a friend so he could have one in addition to his gits. It played extremely well, just sounded really bad recorded.

My "cheap" bass right now is the SX scorpion bass (same company as Brice). Check out www.rondomusic.com for all their selections. Great variety and good prices. The pick-ups aren't the world's greatest, but easy to play, great looks, and pretty rugged.

From what I have read, Brices are a step (maybe two or three) up from the SX stuff.

I have a pretty cheap (around 300 EUR) Yamaha bass with passive electronics and it's a fantastic value for the money. Yamaha basses are totally underrated in my opinion.

The best bass I've played in the lower end price range was the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. As is, it is a great all-round J-Bass. A colleague threw a set of Duncan Quarter Pounder Basslines in and it just slays now!!
