By 'epic', I'm talking about those longer majestic type tracks that take you through an entourage of emotions and keep you hanging on until the very end...

My votes (in no order):

Rime of the Ancient Mariner - Maiden (surely no one can disagree??)
Gates of Babylon - Rainbow
The Pharaoh - Edguy
Unas Slayer of the Gods - Nile (just astounding...)

Any others? :)

Off the top of my head, Queensrÿche's "Suite Sister Mary," but 'Rime' is surely outstanding as well, and my favorite recent 'epic' would have to be Marillion's "This is the 21st Century" though I'm not sure that would qualify as 'metal' in even the broadest definition. :)

And the award for best run-on sentence goes to... ;)

My faves:

Iron Maiden - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Queensryche - Suite: Sister Mary
Wuthering Heights - Within
Running Wild - Treasure Island
Domine - The Battle For The Great Silver Sword
Blind Guardian - Mirror Mirror
Metallica - The Four Horsemen
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Metallica - And Justice For All

There are many, many more, and it depends on your definition of 'epic.' For example, pretty much EVERYTHING done by Summoning, Vintersorg, Bloodthorn, Enslaved, Falkenbach, Thryfing, etc. are seriously epic tunes, but I have a feeling this forum will define epic as 7-8+ minute power/prog songs.

I'll keep adding them as I remember them (or look 'em up ;) )

Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno :headbang:
Iced Earth - Travel In Stygian
Iron Maiden - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Iron Maiden - Phantom Of The Opera
Iron Maiden - Alexander The Great
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence

Ummmmmmmmmmm......... blah... my brain isn't working to well at the moment

Edguy - Theater of Salvation
Angra - Carolina IV
Symphony X - Through the Looking Glass
Stratovarius - Destiny
Stratovarius - Visions
Savatage - Morphine Child

and above all...
X Japan - Art of Life

Symphony X "The Divine Wings of Tragedy"
Blind Guardian "And Then There Was Silence"
Iron Maiden "The Rime of the Anceint Mariner"
Adagio "The Seven Lands of Sin"
And others that I can't think of this early in the morning.

Songs I haven't seen already on the list:

(some of these aren't quite as varied as you people were probably looking for, but whatever)

Savatage: "Chance"
Manowar: "Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts" (it's cheesy but it's damn good)
Mercyful Fate: "Come to the Sabbath"
Bathory: "Twilight of the Gods"
Testament: "Return to Serenity"
Metallica: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"
Helloween: "Halloween"

oh, and of course:
Napalm Death: "You Suffer"

A few of the longer ones here...

Fates Warning - The Ivory Gate of Dreams
Marillion - Grendel
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
Anglagard - Kung Bore
Agalloch - She Painted Fire Across the Skyline
X Japan - Rose of Pain
Dream Theater - Scarred/Space-Dye Vest (the two really go together)
Candlemass - Sorcerer's Pledge
Satyricon - Dark Medieval Times
Therion - The Siren of the Woods
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Emperor - With Strength I Burn

The only X Japan CD I have is Dahlia. I have a few other songs on mp3...like Art of Life and a couple off Blue Blood. I would go out and buy all of their albums, but it's so damn expensive to import them. I really want the Last Live DVD more than anything though. I've seen some clips from it, and the power in the Tokyo Dome that night was absolutely astounding.

Grendel??????!!!!!!!!!?????? lol, I'll have to share that with my Marillion mailing list. I can't think of a song I like *less* by them! To each their own indeed...

However, I would have to mention "Ivory Gate of Dreams" as well, and that reminds me that 'No Exit' should have been mentioned in my post about my favorite albums. God, I could envision a whole thread just about favorite parts of IGoD... :)

Off the top of my head:

MANOWAR - March Of Revenge (By The Soldiers Of Death)
MANOWAR - Battle Hymns
MANOWAR - Guyana (The Cult Of The Damned)
MERCYFUL FATE - Come To The Sabbath (nice callback Ryan)
QUEENSRYCHE - Road To Madness
MEAT LOAF - Bat Out Of Hell (I know..., i know)
JUDAS PRIEST - Victim Of Changes
GUNS N ROSES - November Rain
CRIMSON GLORY - Burning Bridges
ZEBRA - Who's Behind The Door (No, I'm not gay)
RUSH - Xanadu

Need more beers to finish this one!

Eh, what is wrong with Grendel? I don't have a whole lot of Marillion, but that's the best one I have. Actually, it's the live version, and the fans in the audience seemed to like it. I like it.

Weirdo. :p
