Err, I haven't listened to Rush as much as I should, but I know 2112 is awesome, but so is A Farewell to Kings.

There are still a few I need to get, but it seems as though AFTK is many people's favorite Rush album.

I still need: Signals, AFTK, and Hemispheres as far as essential Rush albums

At the moment though, Grace Under Pressure is my favorite.

Isn't 2112 quite popular? The title track is brilliant, but... I think A Farewell to Kings might be an overall more solid album.

Also, what about the first 3? I've heard they're supposed to be kinda bad, is this true?

They are different. The first one had John Rutsey on drums and the other two were when they were coming into the whole prog side of things. They are growing albums. I would imagine the first one isn't that bad though since it has a few songs I like on it. I have heard that Caress of Steel should be one of the last ones to get though.

2112 is hailed as their breakthrough album for good reason. That's probably the album that encapsulates what Rush is all about, but I like GUP more.

I remember this thread before, but you know, Rush is still in my top 10 bands of all time so...I picked Permanent Waves. It's a marriage of Rush's peak 70's material, and a more modern, faster sound to come on the next few. I have all their albums, and my next favorite albums tend to stray back and forth depending on mood. The order I like them/best song on album...
Permanent Waves-Natural Science
Hemispheres-Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemishperes
Caress of Steel-Necromancer(part 2 of By-Tor and the Snow Dog)
Signals-Analog Kid
A Farewell To Kings-Cygnus X-1
Fly By Night-Anthem
Power Windows-Grand Designs
Moving Pictures-Witch Hunt-part III of Fear Trilogy
2112-2112
Counterparts-Leave That Thing Alone
Hold Your Fire-Turn the Page
Test For Echo-Half the World
Presto-War Paint
Snakes and Arrows-The Main Monkey Business
Grace Under Pressure-Kid Gloves
Vapor Trails-Earthshine
Roll the Bones-Bravado
Rush-Here Again
The Rush Tribute Album-Working Man, is the best tribute album I've ever heard, even better than the Yes tribute. Portnoy On the first 7 tracks, Michael Romeo, James Murphy, Steve Morse, Lemur Voice, Shadow Gallery, Stu Hamm, Jake E. Lee, and quite a few others.

I've only heard 2112 and it makes me want to cut my ears off. It takes the worst excesses of prog rock, multiplies it by 10, adds in some pathetic attempt to make a 'concept' a la Pink Floyd's The Wall or Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage but without the intelligence or humour of either, beats you around the head with its obviousness and cheese and on top of all that you have to listen to the grating voice and sickly sweet pop melodies of Geddy Lee.

yeah... theres a whole bunch of stupid remarks :zombie:

I Think Im Going Bald is funny

I did think we had one of these polls already, not that I care

I'll always be partial to Caress of Steel, I believe that is the album that defined Rush but you can hear it on Fly by Night too. havent really kept up much since 2112. I have Presto which I like and recently bought a early/mid 80's one I can never remember the title of, which I like alot.

Yeah, because concept 'songs' or 'albums' are supposed to always be funny

Can you read? Where did I say that? I'm simply drawing the parallel between Joe's Garage and 2112 because they're both concept albums/songs about a world where music is banned. And I'm saying 2112 is not intelligent like The Wall, which also has a similar idea, nor is it witty like Joe's Garage. So on what level does it succeed? All it does, in my eyes, is succeed at being laughable in its cloying obviousness and banality:

"I can't believe you're saying
These things just can't be true
Our world could use this beauty
Just think what we might do
Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you"

Christ I might as well listen to the Sound of Music :puke:

You might want to do a little more research on 2112. Peart was writing this based on topics found in Ayn Rand books. This song also caused a sci-fi magazine to publish and further the story that Peart wrote. The Wall intelligent? Although I love Floyd, the album is about Syd and Waters..the Waters part being "waaah! I got no daddy! My mommy spoiled me!" And the Syd parts being about a "genius" who wasn't smart enough to refrain from excessive acid use, that totally fried his brain. Despite the "intelligence" of the Wall, I like it. I like Zappa as well, but didn't he name two of his kids Dweezil, and Moon Unit?

what an patheticly arrogant ball ass

The Sound of Music is good too

"And the meek shall inherit the earth."

We've taken care of everything
The words you hear the songs you sing
The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes
It's one for all and all for one
We work together common sons
Never need to wonder how or why

We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls
We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls

Look around this world we made
Equality our stock in trade
Come and join the Brotherhood of Man
Oh what a nice contented world
Let the banners be unfurled
Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand

We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
Our great computers fill the hallowed halls.
We are the Priests of the Temples of Syrinx
All the gifts of life are held within our walls.

What can this strange device be?
When I touch it, it gives forth a sound
It's got wires that vibrate and give music
What can this thing be that I found?

See how it sings like a sad heart
And joyously screams out its pain
Sounds that build high like a mountain
Or notes that fall gently like rain

I can't wait to share this new wonder
The people will all see its light
Let them all make their own music
The Priests praise my name on this night

I know it's most unusual
To come before you so
But I've found an ancient miracle
I thought that you should know

Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you

Yes, we know it's nothing new
It's just a waste of time
We have no need for ancient ways
The world is doing fine

Another toy will help destroy
The elder race of man
Forget about your silly whim
It doesn't fit the plan

I can't believe you're saying
These things just can't be true
Our world could use this beauty
Just think what we might do

Listen to my music
And hear what it can do
There's something here as strong as life
I know that it will reach you

Don't annoy us further
We have our work to do
Just think about the average
What use have they for you?

Another toy will help destroy
The elder race of man
Forget about your silly whim
It doesn't fit the plan

I wandered home though the silent streets
And fell into a fitful sleep
Escape to realms beyond the night
Dream can't you show me the light?

I stand atop a spiral stair
An oracle confronts me there
He leads me on light years away
Through astral nights, galactic days

I see the works of gifted hands
That grace this strange and wondrous land
I see the hand of man arise
With hungry mind and open eyes

They left the planet long ago
The elder race still learn and grow
Their power grows with purpose strong
To claim the home where they belong
Home, to tear the Temples down...
Home, to change..

The sleep is still in my eyes
The dream is still in my head
I heave a sigh and sadly smile
And lie a while in bed
I wish that it might come to pass
Not fade like all my dreams

Just think of what my life might be
In a world like I have seen
I don't think I can carry on
Carry on this cold and empty life
Oh...noo!

My spirits are low in the depths of despair
My lifeblood spills over..

VII. Grand Finale

nailed it !

:worship:

I know it was based on ideas from Ayn Rand. I loathe Ayn Rand too, philosophically, but at least she's sophisticated. I don't know what Rand work it was based on, but knowing her cynicism, I'm pretty sure she wasn't intending it to come across as this sickly sweet fairy tale which can pretty much be summed up "Music banned = bad. Music is a powerful and positive force".

And in any event, I wouldn't care so much about its conceptual naivete if the music was good. But it's predictable and lame.

I believe it was based on Anthem, but I'm not sure. I haven't read that book yet. I've read Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead and We The Living.

While a bunch of people might not agree with her philosophically, she can tell a great fucking story. She does remind me of Hawthorne at times because of how much detail she includes in her novels though.

Also, Zappa named his kids:

Diva
Moon Unit
Ahmet
Dweezil

Regardless, he was a fucking genius
