Wat songs do you think have the best beginnings?
Id have to say :
Black Sabbath - NIB, that bass solo is awesome
Ozzy - The Ultimate Sin, I love the drums for some reason....not sure y though
and Slayer - Raining Blood

The start of Montrose's "Rock Candy."
Actually the entire song!

Ahhhh. Nice thread, Anton! Here are a few of my personal faves!

IN THE BEGINNING/SHOUT AT THE DEVIL - I remember me and my buddies playing that in my room with the lights off at sleepovers and just about pissing our pants. At the time, that was the scariest album around! (hey, we were like 12!)

LOVE SONG - Tesla - That acoustic piece at the start is one of my favorite guitar parts of all time

DAMAGE, INC.- Back when metallica did it right! That intro was awesome!

GOD OF THUNDER - KISS - That little kid at the start

CHURCHILL'S SPEECH - Intro to Maiden's ACES HIGH

two words : ALLLLLLLLLLL ABOOOOOOOOARD!!!!!!!!! HA HA HA - Ozzy - Crazy Train

VAN HALEN - INTRUDER - I always thought it was a great/creepy lead into Pretty Woman

"What we've got here is failure to communicate..." GNR Civil War - I think that sets the song up pretty well

AC/DC - Hells Bells

fun stuff!

And last, but not least,

TED NUGENT - "Telegram for Mr. Billary" - Kiss My Ass!

The only one that comes to mind right now is "Helena" by Misfits, the riff is really cool and I love the words... If I cut off your arms and I cut off your legs, will you still love me anyway? :D

Zoetrope - Kill the Enemy (these hands are made to fly ...)
Anthrax - Madhouse (muahahahaha....)
Rush - Temples of Syrinx (from slow accoustic to great song...)

I'd have to say Judas Priest: Painkiller Those drums sure get your attention.
also Savatage: Jesus Saves - a spoken word intro leading
into a great riff.

How bout a little fire scare crow? Anyway yeah Helena rocks but the one riff that constatly draws me back to it at least once a week is

CHEMISTRY by SUSPERIA , that opening riff floors me every time. Its just so damn melodic and catchy.
TORTUGA BAY by RUNNING WILD. THat whole song slays.
CASTRUM DOLORIS by MARDUK is another that the opening riff which carries through most of the song is just catchy and heavy and groovy.
FUNERAL IN CARPATHIA by COF the drums in the beginning are awesome and lead right into a hell of a cool riff.

The fade in at the beginning of "Orion" is awesome - simple but when the drums double up and the guitars kick in it's awesome. The intro to "Blackened" is sick as well. The intro to "Hell Awaits" is downright scary...let's see...what else...how about the intro to "Madhouse" is pretty cool too...

Metallica - Battery
Megadeth - Good Mourning
Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
Slayer - Spill the Blood
Testament - DNR
Heathen - Heathen
Judas Priest - Electric Eye
Mercyful Fate - Into the Coven
King Diamond - Black Horsemen
Rush - A Farewell to Kings

Overkill - Gasoline Dream (Just a great buildup.)
Slayer - South of Heaven ("Before you see the light, you must DIE!")
Megadeth -Holy Wars (DUNDUNDUN DUNDUNDUN DUNDUNDUN DUNDUNDUN DUNDUNDUUUUUN...immortal riff.)
Virgin Steele - Kingdom of the Fearless (After the orchestral part when the actual song kicks in with that crazy power metal riff and explodes straight into the verse.)
Blind Guardian - Majesty (Again, that first riff part...great vocal melodies there too.)

My Dying Bride "The Crown Of Sympathy" - that dark acapella gets me everytime!

AC/DC "For Those About to Rock" - I dont think many will agree, but I just love that intro!

Iron Maiden "Wrathchild" - Killer (pun intended!) bass action!

Slayer "Angel of Death" - has a more "metal" opening ever graced a song?!!

Led Zep "When the Levee Breaks" - the drums of doom!

Deep Purple "Fireball" - Lord's organ pulls you in, yet convinces you that you're in for a mellow, sweet ride....then, all of a sudden...BOOM!

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath .. need I say more? lol

My Dying Bride - The Wreckage of My Flesh .. those growling vocals are just killer with the doomy guitar riff and drums

Led Zeppelin - Rock n Roll ... classic drum riff

Ozzy - Diary of a Madman ... Randy was quite the student of Classical guitar and mixed it with metal better then any other guitarist in my opinion.. better then Malsteen as well...

Metallica - Battery ... always liked this intro because i like classical influenced guitar in metal if done right

Slayer - on Reign in Blood album the one song that starts with a guitar "gallop" riff then the 2nd guitar joins in. i always forget which song that is.. is it Jesus Saves? ... anyways other then that song the beginning of the song Reign in Blood as well..

Metallica - Fight Fire with Fire ... classical intro followed into a massive metal assault... in the good ole days when they were actually gods...

There are other songs but they slip my mind at the moment.. but someone already mentioned Megadeth's bass intro to Peace Sells so wont put that on my list..
