Best starting materials to mix from?

Track everything as clean as possible and get it right at the source. Always provide DI tracks for guitar and bass. For synths if you can get the sound you like record it and send it, if not send it as a midi with notes of what needs doing.

If you want to eliminate yourself as the 'weakest link' in any part of the recording, be sure to provide DI's of the guitar and bass, and preferably program the drums and keyboards (Not so essential for keyboards but drums take a lot of money and a lot of experience to record well). And don't record with any plug-ins on. Basically if you want to allow the mixer the most flexibility, provide him with the rawest possible source.

The toneport has an instrument input which is OK but doesn't compete with the big name DI's really. Whether you want to upgrade depends on how seriously you take this whole thing and how much money you have. The reason you need a DI track is so that people who mix it can reamp.

The SM58 is alright, I've used it for vocals many times. Its no where near as good as the SM7 is but it will do if you don't have any money.

And to the question aimed at Morgoe, yep a single midi track is fine.

Hi guys,

To start off sharply I'm a busy guy and dont have the intense fiery interest in mixing and mastering music as you guys have. Let alone the time to learn it and get good at it. But I love music and creating it. So my plan is to record all of my music myself and get someone else to mix and master it.

My question lies therein, Whats the best way for me to present my recordings to someone who wants to mix it? I'll be recording the bass, guitars and vocals myself and programming any keys drums or piano or anything else. So what would be the easiest and best way for me to go about recording the tracks?

So mixers and masterer..ers out there. What would be your perfered starting point for Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Drums and then Synths/Piano etc? Trying to make this as painless as it can.

Thanks.

Hey man, I'm in Waterford City so if you ever want to have a look at my very simple setup, just send me a PM and I can run you through everything so you can see what I do and the results I get with the gear I have.
