best vai cd?

flexable
flexable leftovers
passion and warfare
sex and religion
alien love secrets
the fire garden
the ultra zone
alive in an ultra world
real illusions:reflections

take your pick, there really all that damn good, but if your just getting into vai, go with passion and warfare, its still one of the best albums out ever.

My faves in order are Passion and Warfare, Fire Garden, Ultra Zone, Alien Love Secrets, Real Illusions, Flexable, Sex and Religion, Alive, and Leftovers. His non-solo work is a tie between Alcatrazz and DLR's first album.

My favorite is Passion and Warfare, but be sure to grab Fire Garden too, for Bangkok & Fire Garden Suite, what a piece of art. I enjoy all of his cd's except for Sex and Religion, it all sounds so 'generic' to me. Devin Townsend's solo stuff kicks ass though.

yeah, most vai fans will say passion and warfare. its a classic in its own right. i also really like alien love secrets and live in the ultra zone, which isnt mentioned much but is a very good live album of material that was written expressly for the album (ie not found on any other vai release). good luck.

In my opinion, it's all crap. But that's just my opinion. P&W is the best one to get if you want to acquaint yourself with the material beforehand, but it's not really necessary to acquaint yourself with the material. Just listen closely to the first song and know that the other songs will feature the same licks.

That's how I feel about most other guitarists in metal.

Vai's stuff is cool, but his recordings are nothing compared to actually seeing him LIVE. That's his strength, not his solo records. I know you want some Vai stuff but if you just asked what guitar album to get, I'd recommend John Petrucci's 'Suspended Animation' instead of any Vai cd. JP's new album slays the new Vai & Satch records IMHO.

I have to agree - Vai is hands down the best performer in a live situation I have seen, and I've seen just about everybody.

Good to hear good stuff about Petrucci's solo. I haven't got it yet, but will pick it up shortly.

Passion and Warfare. I am not a huge Vai fan, but it has his essential songs IMHO. I want that Petrucci cd, but I hear that his online ordering system leaves much to be desired. I hope to see it amazon eventually

Yeah, I ordered Petrucci's cd the day after it came out. I still don't even know if they actually got the order. (edit)I just checked his site. Order is still pending. :err: Lame.

And Vai's new album is sounding really, really good. I think "Lotus Feet" is his best ballad yet, specifically because of the effective use of orchestration. "Firewall" is so great and so much fun at the same time, with the vocal intro and the horn band. Unfortunately they're not playing that one live. I'm seeing him this Friday.

And for reference, I have all of his solo albums except for 'Alive In An Ultra World,' and 'Alien Love Secrets.'
