According to rock guitar hero Steve Stevens, there’s no reason for musicians to feel “sick” performing their hit songs, as some have revealed in the past, reports Greg Prato for Ultimate-Guitar.com.
One can never know when or if a song would become a major hit. You could spend years trying to figure out the perfect song. On the other hand, there are songs initially intended as quick album fillers that are fan favorites. Whatever may be the case, the audiences will always want to hear these massive hit songs, no matter how often they’re played and some artists will feel a bit bored.
But as Stevens told us in a recent interview, as part of promoting his new Ciari guitar model, it makes no sense to be sick of a song that brought you so much profit and that entertained so many people. In his case, it’s Billy Idol’s legendary “Rebel Yell,” which Steve co-wrote with Idol for the singer’s 1983 record of the same name.
Ultimate-Guitar.com: Have you ever felt restrained playing for someone else? Is it difficult to often play hits that people want to hear all the time?
Steve Stevens: “I mean, we’re blessed to have hits. [Laughs] I never understood when you read an interview with somebody, saying, ‘That song bought me my house, but I’m sick of playing it.’ Those are quality problems, I think. So, no, never get sick of it.
“And I really look at it as a challenge, working with Billy. Obviously, a 43-year partnership is hard in our business. And I love being a collaborator — I’ve always been a band guy. I grew up in an era where our guitar heroes were all in bands: [Led] Zeppelin, or Deep Purple, or Genesis, or YES. They were guys that used their instruments for the greater good of the song.
“Much like I would imagine a film director or something, when I sit down with Billy, there’s a concept, there’s a series of notes and melody and words, and there’s all this stuff that I get to work with. So, certainly not frustrated in any way.”
