Black Crowes album War Paint

I've been a fan since the first album. They aren't one of my very favorite bands, but their stuff is always solid and good fun. They are one of those bands that always makes good records, but usually with one or two songs I skip through after awhile. Still, I'll check it out as usual. The Jimmy Page thing, and Lions were both great, being their most recent output. Oh, and one of Chris Robinson's solo records was solid too. I've heard the new song - it's good, but not amazing. We'll see what I think of the whole record.

Speaking of the Jimmy Page thing - believe it or not, I'd rather see him tour with the Black Crowes again than do a Zep reunion tour. Their renditions were spot on, and Chris Robinson has the chops to sing the Robert Plant stuff.

I'm looking very forward to this album. Excellent band!

The Page/Crowes thing is essential! They do some of the more obsure Zep numbers and do them damn well! Three guitarists make these songs shine!
They also do some classic blues/rock tunes such as Fleetwood's "Oh Well", which slays!

i'm expecting big this from this album. i'm a huge crowes fan. i will admit though i really dislike the 2 albums they released in the middle of the 90's ("three snakes and a charm" and "amorica") i really like the first 2 albums and the last 2 albums ('by your side" and "lions") i also really like the lost crowes stuff.

btw i agree with whoever said they should tour with page again instead of page doing a zeppelin thing

Yeah, the Crowes/Page thing just plain rules. Chris Robinson manages to sound like Plant without ripping him off. There's a cool cover of Shapes of Things, and that cool old Fleetwood Mac song...I forget the title. I think its called "Oh Well." Plus good Zep selections like Ten Years gone, Celebration Day, and Sick Again (which is a real favorite of mine).

I once read a funny interview with the crowes drummer, and he was asked, "which Zeppelin song do you like playing best?" He said, "The one that starts with a killer riff, and then we all come in like a house on fire..."

...which is basically every Zeppelin song, of course, give or take.

I have to track down a used copy of that set...
Thanks.

whats weird is i just checked and for some reason the only studio albums i still own by the crowes are shake your money maker, southern harmony, lions and the lost crowes set. plus i have their greatest hits cd that i never remember buying. maybe an old roomate stole my amorica, three snakes and one charm and by your side:zombie: i have no clue what happened to those 3 albums. should i take the money to buy them again and sell the hits cd or just forget about them? the only good songs i can really remember from those 3 albums are on the greatest hits cd or in earlier versions on the lost crowes set.

i also own the live album with jimmy page, both chris robinson solo albums and the 1 rich robinson solo album. i know marc ford has 2 solo albums but i haven't heard anything from them. are they worth getting?

I have the Chris Robinson solos, and have heard the Rich R. solo, but don't own it. The Marc Ford? No idea on that one.

I think 3 snakes and Amorica are very worth owning, but By Your Side is kinda phoned in.

thanks. i'll see how cheap i can find those albums for. i remember i wasn't overly impressed with any of those 3 actually and like i said, most of the songs on amorica are on lost crowes in slightly different versions. i did like by your side a lot but the 3 songs i liked a lot that made me dig the album (title track, only a fool and kickin' my heart around) are on that greatest hits cd. that being said lions is super underrated. no clue why so many people dislike that album. its probably my 2nd favorite crowes cd

i think the 2 chris robinson albums and the 1 rich robinson album are great and show a different side for both of them. funny thing though it seems like after the solo stuff chris realized he needed his brother playing the guitar and contributing a few rockin songs and rich realized he could do a good co-lead vocal or maybe a couple songs on an album but he couldn't carry the vocals on a whole album and needed chris to sing the songs. then the black crowes reformed
