Black Sabbath playing Lollapalooza

$$$$$

Find it amusing that didn't cross your mind.

It did, but I don't know if they'd be getting much more loot than if they just did a one-off with them as a headliner. And like I said, the Lolla organizers I'm more surprised would want them as they don't really fit their demographic. I would've actually understood Bonnaroo more than Lolla.

Do you really think Ozzy / Sharon care about the artistic integrity of their performance?
They would play Country Thunder if it drew the same numbers as Lollapalooza (Ok, I guess I don't know if it does or not ,but you get the point).

Also, playing Lolla for them is easier than them setting something up on their own.
They just have to sign, show up, and play. No promotional expense on their end, etc.

It's a shame, since I would love to see Sabbath again, but that has to be easily the worst Lollapalooza lineup either.
Usually, there is at least one or two semi-interesting undercard bands.

It will be an hour and a half of silence until IRON MAN is played.

Most importantly, has Bill Ward signed on for this? If not, then who cares anyhow?

on the plus side....every hipster in chicago just got excited. Like Jason said....it will be quiet until they play the classic famous songs. It is funny....remember Metallica was supposed to play...wonder if they bailed and they needed another metal act.

Integrity? Not anymore, but I would think they'd like to play in front of their own fans. 90% of the people that typically go to Lolla probably haven't heard of Black Sabbath, with the exception of Ozzy. That's why I think it's weird. Like I said, Bonnaroo would make more sense, since in recent years they've brought metal acts like Mastodon, Opeth, Metallica, etc.

I actually have been to a few Lollas and enjoy it every time (though one I mostly just worked there). I agree there isn't much in this undercard at all.

LOL, they will play wherever the paycheck is higher. It could be the fucking Oprah show for all they care.

Now I think you might be exaggerating. It's not like Black Sabbath are this somewhat obscure rock band from the 70s. I mean, seriously...

I agree. However, these days "making sense" doesn't seem to be very important for some metal bands, especially considering how tough the market is.

Oh I absolutely am exaggerating. Haha. Still, an overwhelming percentage of the lolla crowd aren't very familiar, let alone know about them. I guess it's more not understanding it on lolla's part more than Sabbath's.

Sorry dude, but I bet Perry Farrell just MIGHT be more of a long time Black Sabbath fan than yourself.

Also, do you SERIOUSLY think Ozzy or Sharon (keep in mind the rest of the band do NOT make such decisions) care about who they play in front of? The band sells themself. I am sure there will be at least a couple thousand Sabbath fans who will still pay to see them there.

The original Lollapalooza's were a blast. I went to about 4 of them I think.

I wouldn't go anywhere near it though at Grant Park.
There is no way I could enjoy seeing Black Sabbath surrounded by folks that don't give a damn.

that goes with most shows though....look at the percentage that go to shows just to text they are at a show.

I think about 95% of the people at the fest have heard of Black Sabbath. Sure they may not own albums by them but they know of them. People will watch them because it will be the "cool" thing to do. as sad as it sounds.
The band doesnt care who they play in front of. it isnt like they are sitting on line going "simon is upset because we are not being a true metal band".

Are you kidding me man? Sabbath is hip to the Pitchfork crowd now. The cross appeal potential is off the charts!

I'm just happy that Lollapalooza is incorporating bands within my general sphere of interest. X JAPAN in 2010 was a blast, but a lot of people said they only went for that band. Perhaps, just maybe, the Lolla execs listened to the media and fan comments about "a metal band not fitting in" and are doing more to include the heavier genres. Little by little. Time will tell.

The only bummer was to travel that far for 1 band and not be interested in catching anyone else on the entire roster. Well, except Soundgarden, but they sucked so hard that I don't want to remember it. It's really too bad that I don't like enough of the bands to justify attending, because Lolla is a fantastically organized, clean, and wonderful event. If they keep going this route musically, I'd love to attend every year!

There will be those into it, no doubt, but Lolla isn't that much like Pitchfork. From the times I've been, it seems to be a fest more dedicated to the alternative and dare I say, "hip" music. That's why it still seems like a weird choice to me. Not complaining but Sabbath just seems to be a total oddball selection as one of the headliners in comparison to the typical mainstream act that Lolla seems to get.

Amen to that. I've been to past Lollas and really enjoyed it, but this year there just isn't hardly any other bands I'm interested in besides Sabbath and RHCP to justify going. I completely agree it is a well run fest though. And I guess that's what one of my main issue is with Sabbath being there is that if they're going to pick someone like them, at least pick a heavier band or two to play during the day to make the Sabbath fans happy. They've done it before from what I recall when Rage or Tool played.
