Black Sabbath are being honored with a spectacular new piece of street art in their hometown of Birmingham ahead of their final concert next month, reports Raynor Perreau of Rova.

The huge mural will bring together the four original members of Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward – and will tell the story of their humble beginnings in Aston, to becoming the heavy metal icons we know them as today.

Commissioned by Central BID Birmingham with support from Network Rail, the mural is set to be 36.5 meters large, and will cover the length of a large wall on Navigation Street in Birmingham’s CBD.

Local Birmingham artist known as Mr Murals is currently working on the mural, and says the piece is not only a tribute to the band, but to the “creative spirit of Birmingham.”

“The band’s influence is everywhere, from metal music to fashion to attitude. I wanted to create something powerful and raw, just like their sound, that people can stand in front of and feel the energy of Sabbath and of the city itself,” says Mr Murals.

Birmingham’s New Street station manager Elizabeth Graham says the new mural will “provide a fantastic welcome to the thousands of fans arriving into the city ahead of Black Sabbath’s Villa Park gig.”

On May 24, Mr Murals shared a sneak peek at the Bill Ward portion of his Black Sabbath mural via Facebook, along with the following comment:

“The top image is from 7:30am and the bottom image is 3:30pm. It’s a little unfortunate the wall sticks out slightly towards the top but making it work as best as possible. I have loved how many people have stopped to chat so far, 99% of the public think I’m painting Jesus.”

The original Black Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – will perform together for the first time in 20 years when they take to the stage to headline the sold-out Back To The Beginning event on July 5 at Villa Park in Birmingham, England.

The all-star Back To The Beginning event will celebrate the true creators of heavy metal and will see Ozzy – who is battling Parkinson’s Disease – play his own short set before joining with Black Sabbath for his final bow. All profits will go to the following charities: Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorn Children’s Hospice, a Children’s Hospice supported by Aston Villa.
