IRON MAIDEN fan site (www.maidenfans.com) report that BLAZE frontman/former Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley recently spoke to Sweden's Metalshrine.se about his battle with alcoholism.

"Yeah, I have had some massive problems," he admitted. "The police phoned my wife and said, 'We have a man unconscious on the street and we think it is your husband.' After that, I had to take a pretty hard look at my life, and think why does that happen? Something inside my made me want to drink myself unconscious to the point of oblivion.

With medication and with seeing a psychiatrist and things like that, I have been able to live a much more satisfied life, I have been a lot more happier and spend less time drunk and more time sober and working on the music and the things that I love, but unfortunately my marriage didn't survive. I survived it, I healed, but the marriage didn't. It's a shame really. You know these things happen.”

Metalshrine: You were once new in a band, Iron Maiden, did you learn anything from that experience now when you have two new guys in your band?

“Yeah, I suppose. A lot of the feelings I had back then were really uncomfortable, because Iron Maiden was a really big band. I try to keep it with my band to try to be a bit more human about things and basically just have a good time. As long as everybody understands that the single most important thing is the music and doing the best possible show you can for the fans, then that's it. To be doing this and make a living of it is fantastic. Whenever a new person comes in to the band we just try to make them feel comfortable, we all been there, don't worry too much. I'm really proud that the fans we have are so supportive and loyal. It's incredible."

As previously reported, Blaze Bayley will be celebrating his birthday at the 15th Anniversary party for Flash Magazine and Metal Shock Magazine’s 400th issue in Italy on May 29th at Indians Saloon, Bresso, Milan. THE CLAIRVOYANTS, a very popular Italian Iron Maiden tribute band will be performing on the night and Bayley will join them for a few Maiden songs and some Blaze tunes.

The Blaze gig follows hot on the heels of a similar set-up with former STRATOVARIUS singer Timo Kotipelto, who performed with The Clairvoyants on May 7th. Kotipelto’s set list included Maiden classics ‘Aces High’, ‘The Trooper’, ‘Wasted Years’, ‘Flight Of Icarus’, ‘Run To The Hills’ and ‘Running Free’, the song ‘Reasons’ from his new Coldness album, and ‘Forever’ from the Stratovarius catalogue.

You know I really like Blaze alot and think he is a great guy. I hope all goes well for him. I look foward to getting the new album.

I think Blaze is a good guy...but being a Maiden fan since 1982, he just didn't do it for me...I still bought all their albums with him and supported their tours when they came around, but it just wasn't the same...as soon as Bruce came back it was like a rebirth. The tour they did with Bruce last year was absolutely phenomenal!!!! They did all old shit...me and my buddy Justin were with our wives and we thought we were 19 years old again...UP THE IRONS!!!!

The Maiden tours have been great! I saw them for the first time last summer. Actually caught it twice in the area one in NJ and one in NY. Motorhead/Dio/Iron Maiden... you don't get more metal than that.

I also saw them this past January with Arch Enemy at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. It was an amazing experience to see them in the club atmosphere although it is a rather large place. I was four rows of people from the stage and to have Bruce walk up on their stage props and tour over me waving the flag during "The Trooper" was amazing. Also have Angela from Arch Enemy right above and in front of me during Arch Enemy's set was rather breath taking too.

I was lucky enough to see Iron Maiden on the 7th Son of a 7th Son tour at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center...not a big venue at all...and it was probably one of the best shows I have ever seen. Frehley's Comet opened up (Ace was WAY too drunk)...but still a great show nonetheless...I love the small venues when bigger bands come and play...really awesome...

I hear you man, I hear you. Dito here, nothing against Blaze he wasn't just what Maiden needed, and judging from the last two efforts Bruce should have continued with his solo career

Iron Maiden as the band I love for taking me into metal died in 1988 :erk: , with a couple of gasps in 1990 and 1992 before languish into boredom.

I will give anything to see Dickinson/Smith/Murray/Harris/McBrain coming with another "Piece Of Mind" or another "Powerslave".

That's a great story and it shows what a big man Blaze is for standing up to his problem. I am a drinker as well and I went through some tough times against the bottle myself. From time to time, I still make a bad choice with my drinking like going on a binge but getting behind the wheel of a car is not an option and neither is being abusive to my wife or missing much work, so I have done ok for the past few years.

Nah, I don't need to get rid of it. If my short binges start to turn into long ones where it affects my work, family life or social life (not that I have a social life,) I will quit for a while.

What I am saying is that I have control over my drinking, but there were times in the past where it had control of me. The only way I found to fix that problem was to stop for nine months. If it happens again.... I will quit again for a while. I don't like to lose at anything and when something has control over you, you lose. I will not allow that to happen.

The reason I made the original post was to let people know that there are powerful forces out there that can take over your mind...... drugs (to include alcohol) porno, even things like music.
