I'm expecting a Demons & Wizards digipak in the post any day now, and if I particularly like Hansi's lyrics and vocal style (as I suspect I will), which of BG's albums would be the best to start with?

I cant remember the name of it at the moment, but its the one before Nightfall in Middle Earth, it has the song journey through the dark on it, its their heaviest one though Nightfall is a close second (a little bit over the top for my tastes though!)

I've got Middle Earth, everyone was telling me how good it was, but I've got to admit that it hasn't exactly inspired me to go and get more.
The music's OK, but I think the spoken word makes a bit "self indulgent and wanky" for my tastes.

Blind Guardian are sweet!
I would recommend getting Imaginations From The Other Side followed closely by Somewhere Far Beyond (I think that's the one you were thinking of Spawn).
Imaginations is a freakin' awesome album, every song kicks ass.

Blind Guardian kick ass !!
I love the acoustic guitars in their songs and they also write some killer songs.
Probably best to start with ....
Imaginations from the other Side or
Tales from the twilight World (this album might be a bit hard to get into at first but I love it)
Blind Guardian's first 2 albums are fairly average so stay away from them.
The band also do a cool cover of Sufin USA and Mr. Sandman which has a completley evil and dark funny film clip

Very thrashy and speedy and melodic. Another words great stuff!!!! I mean with songs like majesty and guardian of the blind how could you not like it????
But it still isnt as good as Tales, Somewhere and Imaginations. While I love Nightfall, I have to say that it isnt as good as the others. But Tales is probaly the best cause Tales has the best blind guardian song ever written on it. The Last Candle!!!!!!!!!! Everything about this song is perfect

I've had Nightfall for a while, and when I heard people saying once that it was their best album I was a tad disappointed, because I think it's ok and all but some of those vocals are so cheesy.
Anyway I bought Somewhere the other day and it sounds much better. Glad to hear you guys like it!

Err, nah! I wouldn't go as far as saying "stay away from them".
Follow The Blind kicks off with Banish From Sanctuary... probably the one song ahead of its time (1990) in terms of vocal harmonies, because nobody was doing it at the time.
Later albums, of course, concentrated on vocal harmonies and heaviness. Follow The Blind and Battalions Of Fear, while early in BG's development, I think is a worthy addition to any BG fans collection.
Anyhow... that's my opinion.
