In a new interview with Guitar World, Blue Öyster Cult’s guitarist Buck Dharma said the band’s classic hit “Burnin’ For You” was originally written for his 1982 solo album. The track is featured on the band’s eighth studio album Fire Of Unknown Origin, originally released in June 1981 via Columbia.
When asked about issuing one solo album – 1982’s Flat Out – and most of the material deemed too “poppy” by the band, Buck responded, “That’s true. I’m a pop guy at heart. I wrote a lot of stuff that wouldn’t go on the band’s records. ‘Burnin’ For You’ was supposed to be on my solo record – that was the plan – but Sandy Pearlman [Blue Öyster Cult’s manager] convinced me to have the band do it. And that made sense since it would have been bigger with the band playing it than if it wound up on a Buck Dharma record.”
“Burnin’ For You” made Canada Top Singles (RPM) at #47 and hit #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single is certified 2x platinum in the United States.
