Seriously. Who the HELL are Bohse Onkelz?

Bloodstock really got me in the mood for going to another metal festival next year, but the only other plausible ones are Bang Your Head ( http://www.bang-your-head.de/english/ebilling.htm ) and Wacken ( http://www.wacken-open-air.com/index_eng.html ). Bang Your Head's programme seems sensible enough; I'll admit to not being familiar with the actual music of White Lion or UFO, but I know OF them. But to find out that this seemingly obscure German group "Bohse Onkelz" were headlining Wacken, the world's biggest metal festival, was a huge shock to me. Especially when they're pushing fairly big names like Grave Digger and Nevermore out of the spotlight. I tried to find out about them but I can't find any decent English sites about them, even their official website is German-only.

Obviously I'll reserve judgement on Bohse Onkelz until I've heard their music, and to be honest I'm not really criticising them at all (and I'm CERTAINLY not saying that they're "obviously crap" because I've not heard of them, no metalhead would say that), but as it stands I'm really quite shocked. Since it's the 15th anniversary, I would expect to see one of the bands that made German metal famous, like... well, you know who I'm thinking of (although I wouldn't mind Gamma Ray or Blind Guardian).

I'm trying to get what Bohse Onkelz I can from Soulseek right now, but since they're taking forever to download, I thought I'd post this in the meantime. Does anyone else here know anything about Bohse Onkelz, or have any particular thoughts as to why they're headlining Wacken? Could their position on the bill be concealing a bigger name, a lá Metallica's surprise appearance at Donnington this year? Maybe, but it doesn't make any sense to conceal a headlining act like that, since headliners sell tickets. It could be that the German fans just want to see a German-singing band in the spotlight, I suppose, but bands like Primal Fear, Helloween and Gamma Ray are hugely popular in their homeland as far as I know. Or are Bohse Onkelz actually a lot more famous than I realised? Any thoughts?

Bohse Onkelz are a punk band.

They used to be Nazi's when they started, their most famous songs are "Turks Out(Get Back To Ankara)" and "how to kill your Jew" and other such classics.

Wacken oranizers are pushing this big anti-nazi thing for next year, there is a boycott planned I think, trying to remove them from the bill, I hope so anyway, because they aren't Nazi's now, we deserve a better band.

So instead of a huge band like someone else who could headline we have to see shitty ex-nazi punk.

this year they had Running Wild for fuck's sake.

Oh well, hope they can't play, getting Grave Digger to take their slot on Thursday would be good.

I want to send this simple equation to the organisers:

Your festival (Wacken) = Legendary Metal Festival. Legendary for being so metal.

+

Bohse Onkelz = An ex-Nazi Punk Band. Very lacking in metal credentials.

=

General Confusion/Dismay from Wacken festival goers, who have come from around the globe to see Legendary Metal Acts.

It's terrible times when a punk band gets a slot at a metal fest.

I think they'll be tucked away on the party stage and surely they can't be headlining. I think the headliners this year will be Judas Priest, Blind Guardion, Children Of Bodom, Helloween & Iced Earth

Theres a lot of contraversy regarding the Bohse Onkelz...A lot of the german people on the wacken board say that they have a right wing following which they can do without...of course i know holger and the wacken crew are putting the slogan metalheads againts racism which is good yeah but to be honest id rather like to see them removed from the bill. I had too much fucking stress at last years wacken and i can seriously do without it again too :(

As for the headliners saturday i reckon that it will be priest :D.

But also im a bit confused i thought saxon was playing thursday

No, Bohse Onkelz are headlining the "Night to Remember" that is the Thursday, it will more likely be a night to forget.

I hope there is like, 10 people watching them, and they only go to boo them and throw shit at them.

Death to Bohse Onkelz

They are headlining on the Thursday night, it's not right.

Saxon are on Friday and an unknown band for Saturday, I predict Maiden or Priest.

I really hope that they are removed from the bill.
Priest would be nice, but i think we re more liekly to get Iced Earth now they have the new Album. Maiden won't do it as their european tour will be over by then.

I saw Bodom last year, they put on a great show, but again the new style is not to my taste, the same situation as N*Flamz this year.

Very dissapointing

Death To The Bohse Onkelz, for depriving me of good metal, or even bad metal, any metal is better that shitty punk.

And Death To Punk aswell, posers

I didn't know that there was a problem with metalheads being racist.

Well there is a whole Genre or Black Metal that is racist.

Nationalist Socialist Black Metal

The likes of Graveland.

Not forgetting Burzum, of course

A large Polish scene of NSBM.

Eye Of Odin are a British Pagan/Viking band, who incorporate NS beliefs

Darkthrone's Famous saying "True Norwegian Black Metal" was originally "True Aryan Black Metal"

Graveland happen to be a great band, but could never play at Wacken.

Eye Of Odin's last gig in Bradford got raided by the police, lots of people were arrested I think

Maybe racism in metal is more of an issue than it is here in the UK.

I still think that having a festival dominated by the theme "metalheads against racism" is fucking WEAK though.

Personally I like my metal to be far removed from politics, let's leave that to the punk idiots.

'Metalheads against Punks' would be a better slogan.

I suppose there are very few black folk in (or into) metal.

Yep what HMS says is true theres a big NSBM scene mostly based in Poland i think. Other bands include Gontyna Kry, Thunderbolt, Hate Forest, Tronus Abyss Etc.

Also Graveland are a great band but the political views are just mad. Poltics should stay out of metal. All we need is beer spikes and leather!!!!!! :D
