Seriously. Who the HELL are Bohse Onkelz?
Bloodstock really got me in the mood for going to another metal festival next year, but the only other plausible ones are Bang Your Head ( http://www.bang-your-head.de/english/ebilling.htm ) and Wacken ( http://www.wacken-open-air.com/index_eng.html ). Bang Your Head's programme seems sensible enough; I'll admit to not being familiar with the actual music of White Lion or UFO, but I know OF them. But to find out that this seemingly obscure German group "Bohse Onkelz" were headlining Wacken, the world's biggest metal festival, was a huge shock to me. Especially when they're pushing fairly big names like Grave Digger and Nevermore out of the spotlight. I tried to find out about them but I can't find any decent English sites about them, even their official website is German-only.
Obviously I'll reserve judgement on Bohse Onkelz until I've heard their music, and to be honest I'm not really criticising them at all (and I'm CERTAINLY not saying that they're "obviously crap" because I've not heard of them, no metalhead would say that), but as it stands I'm really quite shocked. Since it's the 15th anniversary, I would expect to see one of the bands that made German metal famous, like... well, you know who I'm thinking of (although I wouldn't mind Gamma Ray or Blind Guardian).
I'm trying to get what Bohse Onkelz I can from Soulseek right now, but since they're taking forever to download, I thought I'd post this in the meantime. Does anyone else here know anything about Bohse Onkelz, or have any particular thoughts as to why they're headlining Wacken? Could their position on the bill be concealing a bigger name, a lá Metallica's surprise appearance at Donnington this year? Maybe, but it doesn't make any sense to conceal a headlining act like that, since headliners sell tickets. It could be that the German fans just want to see a German-singing band in the spotlight, I suppose, but bands like Primal Fear, Helloween and Gamma Ray are hugely popular in their homeland as far as I know. Or are Bohse Onkelz actually a lot more famous than I realised? Any thoughts?
