Maiden Afganistan mentioned this to me a few minutes ago, and it got me feeling nostalgic.

Back in 1983, Brian May teamed up with Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alan Gratzer (of REO Speedwagon), session bassist Phil Chen (who collaborated with Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart) and keyboardist Fred Mandel (who has worked with Queen, Alice Cooper and Elton John) to record an EP inspired by a Japanese-produced sci-fi puppet show called Star Fleet (originally known in Japan as X-Bomber). The idea came from Brian's son, who was a big fan of the show at the time.

'80s rock and a puppet show with trippy special effects. It can't get any more perfect than this. Here's the music video of the title track:
