I suppose it works out for everyone, but I’m not entirely sure how. Gomek Records, newcomers to metal, have begun their quest for world domination by, um, not charging for their releases. You heard me right. Head to their official website, and download anything you want. Burnt Shadows are the first to hit land, submitting a four-song metalcore effort called One Last Breath, and for what it is, it’s not bad.

Admittedly, though, you have to be a metalcore aficionado to fancy what this troop is touting via their demo. Like I said, there are four tracks on One Last Breath, and any of them could pass for the endless droves abiding under the oversaturated –core banner. Burnt Shadows don’t seem to be as ho-hum as they are average. I feel like I’m talking to myself whenever I bring up metalcore, but at any rate, this isn’t irritating in the least. “Sarin” contains traditional breakdowns, distorted vocals, and coordinated grooves – three metalcore requisites – and “This Blood is Forever” breezes by just as its forerunner does. Subtle differentiation does arrive in the form of “Release the Dogs,” however, because there’s a conspicuous influx of Pantera-esque attitude assimilated into the mix, which does work in favor of the song and band overall. Still, neither strikes me as essential, even though the recording sounds phenomenal considering that it stems from such an inexperienced group. I mean, forming in 2004 doesn’t quite merit the “seasoned veteran” label. The artwork is decent too, reminding me of Reinfection’s Peace Through Killing due to the colors and inclusion of war-related imagery. As a matter of fact, not only do you acquire the songs themselves when you download from Gomek Records, but you get a printable insert as well.

Nonetheless, Burnt Shadows aren’t blazing trails with One Last Breath, nor are they capable of razing venues at this particular juncture. In any case, this is promising for those of you who don’t get squeamish when you imbibe metalcore. I would like to see more innovation, though, in addition to tighter musicianship. I remind you that, for better or worse, Gomek’s discography is free for download. Now go put that mouse to work.
