Favela of My Dismay
Whats the biggest purchase ye fuggs have made in your lives where ye ended up ragretting it? Myself personally, 500 kopecks on a broken down Toyota Sedan that wouldn't even run. Had only 800 to my name at the time. Never got to drive it a city block, and ended up selling it to ClimbThar's parents for around what I paid. Think they got a little mileage out of it.

This purchase was made sight unseen mind ye. As my lady at the time took me on a surprise excursion to go see Metallica. Saw some other faggot shit like Staind that night as well. Oddly enough, I dont dislike Staind one iota, honestky find that Aaron cat to be nice and soothing. Well they dont translate well live. Vucks were more exposed than Eternal Champion that long Summer Eve in August.

Post suitable for the Terlit Chronicles, but I dont want to distract from the glory holing.

Not sure. I think I've gotten my money's worth out of most big purchases. I'm constantly disappointed with the socks I buy, though.

I once bought a bed that came with a 10 year warranty. Around year 9 the thing pretty much sunk down in the middle, so we went to the bed store. They were going to get us a free bed until it turned out that the bed brand we bought was now out of business.

*sad trombone*

I dunno if I regret it, but I burnt up a large four figure sum on trying immunotherapy for dust mite allergy. Two years of inconvenience before I gave up as I figured it'd interfere too much with enjoyment of an overseas holiday. I dunno if it made my issues worse, but it's possible. I also lent a similar sum to an acquaintance that I'll probably never see again.

I'm constantly disappointed with the socks I buy, though.
Best quality socks I've bought are the Nike dri-fit ones. Given I walk around in socks at home, I'm surprised at how long they've lasted with no sign of any holes yet, just a few loose threads. Other socks bought later have disintegrated in their presence.

My wife’s Toyota Sienna is a total piece of shit. I think we paid $24000 for it. Regretted it before we even got home.

Is this the one that you didn't want to test drive because it was a minivan?

As for me, I spent a large sum on a custom guitar from a rather respected luthier. While it's a very nice instrument overall, it is absolutely not worth the wait/hype/money. It was delivered to me with a rather mind-boggling cosmetic flaw which I assumed was a result of being banged around during shipping. No, he admitted that he had actually dropped a pickup onto the finished paint while assembling the hardware.

I'm still not sure why he didn't attempt to fix it, but I requested a $500 refund which he immediately agreed to. After waiting about a year for this to be finished, it was the first thing I saw after opening up the case. It really just soured the whole experience and I still feel shitty about it. I'm absolutely not the type of person who would ask an artisan craftsman for a refund, but I couldn't let this slide. There have been a couple of other issues as well, but he's been very accommodating with helping me get things taken care of. The worst part is that this shouldn't have been a leap of faith, this guy makes INCREDIBLE looking guitars and has a cult-like following. I've never seen anyone express any kind of disappointment. Guess that's just my luck!

@dorian gray I remember that minivan non-test-drive thing as well! That's still the best RC car story ever.

@MFJ Who built that guitar? Unless you'd rather not say. Wonder if I know them and/or their reputation.

I've had a few custom basses built... one experience was not good at all. The build time was 7x longer than stated and then the finish came off on my thumb whilst playing. Neat!

I'll send you a PM, I'm not at the point of publicly naming anyone. I respect his art, but it just wasn't a very "on brand" experience for me.

you know that that's gotta be an expensive guitar when the partial refund for a cosmetic flaw is nearly more than my most expensive instrument

yeah I have a unique guitar now but it just wasn’t worth the money. My other daily driver is a Gibson explorer and it’s simply better in just about every single way. Again- not a cheap guitar, but at least it was worth the cost.

@MFJ and @NAD :tickled: at you guys
That story must’ve been the *first* Sienna that I bought brand new. Just drove it off the Toyota lot without a test drive. Had zero fucks. Wife totaled that one. Got a second one at carmax and it suckssss

I love the guitar story. I guess he thought you might not notice?
Also lol at @NAD thumb finish story

I think he was hoping that I would just accept it as a part of the finished product (or something?)

I sent a somewhat frantic message like "I don't know how this happened since it was packed so well, but there's this really obvious nick right below the bridge". He owned up to it immediately but it was just a weird response. He implied that he didn't want to tell me ahead of time, because it might be worse if I was expecting to see this defect right away. It isn't a HUGE flaw, but you'd have to be brain dead to miss it. Imagine a brand new guitar with a smooth, shiny, single-color finish. Now imagine taking a guitar pickup and dropping the corner of it directly onto the finish from at least a foot high. That's what happened and it just isn't fucking acceptable. If he had told me that the thing was delayed for 3 months because he had to fix it, then I wouldn't have even cared. I guess he just wanted to see how I would react, and to let me take the lead with "making it right". How was this the correct solution to the problem (as opposed to just fixing it)?

yeah that's dumb and bad

perhaps a month into owning my only semi-expensive guitar, the $750 vgs eruption pro evertune (which is a very pretty guitar), i did the same thing and dropped some kind of tool onto the body of the guitar that made a pretty sizable dent

it felt really bad for a while but since shit like that is inevitable anyway if you use your instruments, in a way it's almost kinda nice to get it over with early so you don't have to baby it quite so much after that

but it's much better to have your dumb clumsy self do it than getting it pre-ruined

<---- look at this poor scrub thinking 750 is an expensive instrument lmao

Here's the thing though, any $750 guitar should be more than adequate for 95% of players. I certainly don't need these expensive things, but I have a bad habit for buying/selling fancy shit. The best guitar that I've ever owned was a Guild S-100 Polara. They're like $800 new and I think I got it for $500 on eBay ("B-stock" because it had a small crack in the finish). I sold it, and I regret it. Now I have two guitars that are considerably more valuable, but they aren't as good. It's just stupid. Humans are stupid and money is stupid.

The point is, play whatever you like. A Yamaha Pacifica HSS is like $200 brand new and they're better almost any guitar $500 and under.

my current favoUrite guitar is my 1984 vintage ibanez blazer

upload_2021-7-7_18-27-16.png

found this beaut in its original case for 75 bux (!!!) at a thrift store a couple years back

she plays like a dream

those volume and tone knobs are not stock, i've since replaced them with gold ones that are similar to the originals and very kool

this is like the actual opposite of buyer's remorse because i love that thing and still can't believe how little i paid for it and that i got there first

sorry for ruining the thread

^^^ Yeah my boss has built many $5,000+ basses and his #1 is an Ibanez Blazer bass with a broken pickguard. Those '80s Ibanez guitfiddles can be fucking amazing.

Let's see............my shittiest bass is easily my $300 Squier. The G-string is useless but otherwise is fine. My most expensive bass is the prettiest ($2,500) but definitely not the best.

$600 P-bass I've had for 24 years and a $1,970 custom J thing are my two "best" basses. I plan on being cremated with one (whichever is worth less money when I kick off, so then my wife can sell the other for $$$). Can't take it with you? Bullshit, it's going with me.

But if I all I had was that shitty Squier Classic Whatever, life would still be okay.

Humans are stupid and money is stupid.
Durn tootin'!
