Caliga - Circle Of Darkness
Gomek.com - 006 - 2005
By Brandon Strader
From the glorious kingdom ov Gomekkistan comes Caliga, which is Latin for "darkness", because at this point the English language is completely tapped when it comes to band names, right? Caliga is a band full of youths on their journey to the Mecca of Metal, and with this debut EP, Circles Of Darkness, they're already part-way there.
Caliga has a lot of good things going for them. Their songwriting style is great with its personal vibes. You know a group of youths wrote these songs, as they're upbeat, fresh, yet still manage to be pretty brutal at times. The vocalist obviously has screaming and growling skill, but he uses too much distortion on his vocals - an act of a vocalist who lacks confidence! The clean vocals drift a bit off-key and could use quite a bit more practice, some reverb, and mixed more consistently within the music. The microphone sounds like it may need replaced, because the vocal sound overall is not too great, not even on the clean vocal sections. The guitar work is braided with thrashing riffs and proficient leads that were well-written and performed, and the percussionist knows his way around the kit as he tosses paradiddles and pummeling double-bass into the music. The bass guitar wasn't too audible in the mix, and a stronger presence would probably do them good.
Circle of Darkness is a good listen if you're looking for some fun, or even some headbanging. Caliga really show their potential with this EP, and their tenacity is applaudable. It's actually 30 minutes long, which is generally long for an EP methinks, so it's worth checking out.
