i'm on my liek 10th car. cars are shit.

so the other day, i decide to get my battery replaced because i am about to go on a trip a couple hours north of so cal..
the guy replaces the battery while the car is on to avoid reseting the electronics and alarm..
THE CAR WAS WORKING 100% before this happened
the car is a 94 st 1.8lt 5 speed manual
the battery currently inside the car is 100% fully charged..
so heres what happens
i put the key in the ignition and start the car... if it actually starts... if the car sits for a while i can usually get it to start.
when the car starts i put it into 1st and give it gas..
after about 2 seconds of gas.. it revs up to about 500 rpm's then the car idles then dies...
but....
when i have someone pushing the car giving it momentum.. if i give the car gas it goes until i have to stop.. then when i put it into gear again it idles then dies..
so i had some guy with a little electronic reader hook it up to my battery telling me it was 100% charged..
but it also said DIODE error...
and i know the diode is part of the alternator..
but my friends dad thinks it may be the gas pump...

Replacing the battery while leaving the car on is dumb in the first place, a simple 9V battery in the ciggerete lighter keeps everything from resetting....
Anyways, Whats happening sounds like it has nothing to do with the battery/alternator. SInce you have issues when gassing it then letting it fall to idle, it sounds more like a airflow/fuel metering problem.... Like it is expecting more air when you close the throttle but it's not there so it dies... I would take it to a respectable tech.

Yeah, the whole compute resetting thing I think didn't start till around 1998 or so anyway?
I might be wrong, I worked at an import shop a long ass time ago but I hate cars, so I definitely didn't retain much information.

well today when i was giving it works great as long as i dont let it sit for too long...
but at one point i let it settle and gave it gas.. it putterd like a gocart from the gas tank... then smoke came out from the air filter....
