A thread on another forum got me thinking about this subject so I thought I'd expand the discussion here.

Essentially, what are your thoughts on different types of enjoyment, how society views them, uses them, etc? To give an example appropriate to this forum: a pop song that grabs your attention instantly with catchy rhythms/vocal hook vs some obscure metal that takes several listens before you really "get it". Or watching a football game vs arguing over the merits of each team, stats, etc. When you think about this dichotomy applies to many different types of media. Music, movies, games, sports, literature, the list goes on.

Keeping it open ended... what are your thoughts on the subject? Generally, or veering off on a tangent if you like.

About 80% of my free time is spent doing "cerebral" things while the other 20% is usually reserved for mindlessly hedonistic and/or decadent things. I'm perfectly happy with that ratio.

To use an example, I enjoy both fun pop with catchy hooks, and I enjoy obscure metal that takes several listens to "get into". But, I enjoy them in completely different ways; and IMO in order to truly appreciate both, you must tackle both with a different mindset.

I wouldn't necessarily even equate it along the lines of cerebral or mindless, but more along the lines of fun that requires effort of some variety. 80/20 is a good ratio though =D

From the thread title i thought this topic was going to be something sexual.

I used to be more 'serious' about things like music and political debate, but over time i started to think of those as more of a waste of time/energy than anything. if i do anything serious these days it's usually either creative writing, programming or studying finance, things that i feel i can benefit myself or others the most from.

Hard drug use is fun!! Although understandably frowned upon by most gentile folk.I love it although it's not something I get to do very often at all, which is probably a good thing and if I ever do I need to make sure I am well out of the view of mainstream people, family included. It's the definition of 'guilty pleasure'!

I thought this was going to be a rant about Craigslist "casual encounters" or some such.

I prefer 90% of my fun to be "casual" and save the "serious business" for 100-page essay PMs to Grant or blogging/thinking about it by myself.

Music is about 80/20 "casual" to "involved." OK that's a lie, 95/5.

Pretty sure i've got you beat on the PM page count atm but yes, it is very serious business indeed

i don't really see a difference...are you trying to say watching or participating in say a basketball game verses discussing the rules, players, controversy or etymology around the word or something?

To put a different wording on it... The seriousness in which people approach their hobbies/interests. With the basketball analogy I would say watching a game or just shooting hoops would be on one end of the spectrum vs playing in a league or discussing the rules/players/controversy.

One thing that fascinates me is how people on the opposite ends of the fun spectrum seem to take such offense at the mere existence of the other end. While I'm certainly not a music junkie/elitist by the standards of this forum I am often told by friends that I should just have more fun with music and listen to XYZ radio favorite instead of "wasting time" exploring more obscure music where it's very hit or miss. Another is in online games. Casual players often say the more serious players turn games into work or a chore and ruin a game when they simply enjoy it in a different way, and the serious players speak of the casual players as if they were some sort of sub-human race for wanting to enjoy a game in a lighthearted manner.

Those are a definitely a couple of the more dramatic examples, but I notice a dichotomy there in many areas.

I'm somewhere in the middle when it comes to video games, I'm far from your typical nofunallowedtypicalsupersmashbrostournykid and I love messing around doing stupid shit (like in TF2 playing melee only, or having an underwater engineer party), however I also do like to play games seriously.

Same with music, I love going crazy and headbanging around my apartment, but I also love just laying down letting the music take me off to another place or trying to understand the music.

I don't treat my time as a resource as such. I spend a large amount of time doing nothing productive at all.

This gave me an erection. Time to have some "other" fun.
