Charred Walls of the Damned

with all the shit he pulls working for Stern Show and im pretty sure he's like full blown alcoholic isin't he? that i was expecting sloppy playing.

but i was surprised, either this was heavily edited or he's still got it.

It's good but it's nothing I'd buy. I've always been somewhat put off by DiGiorgio's playing. I mean he's super fucking good and all, but I think he overplays too much and it distracts me from everything else going on. Plus, I can only handle so much vibrato on the vocals.

I'll probably never listen to this band again, but I won't talk shit about them either. They're definitely excellent, just not my bag.

Anyway, you wouldn't be able to tell from the recording, because even tight and hard hitters are being edited to an inhumane level. Sometimes it's pretty obvious, like the hard-quantized and sample-augmented fast double kick parts.

So you really can't draw much of a conclusion based on this. The thing that transcends production value though, is his actual style, which is still quite unique and very recognizable. Great to hear him on a record again!

About DiGiorgio: Sadus (nowadays) often seems like an autotelic band, only serving him as platform to channel his virtuosity. Something that, indeed, often distracts from the actual songs. I still enjoy the pure self-indulgence though.

But he's low and restarined enough in this mix to not really pop out that much. Much like on the Testament records he played on. In such a scenario, he's one of my favourite bassists in extreme metal.

yeah i figured most likely he had a lot of drum replacement done, some of the parts you can't fake convincingly with samples like the snare fill in the beginning of ghost town (or at least from what i have seen). but i watched a video of him playing Frost yesterday and it seemed fairly recent and he did a damn good job.

but yeah the fast kick parts in that song sound like something i would hear my drum program playing a guitar pro file doing :p
