Cheap but good monitors?

Might be able to find a pair of Yamaha HS-80Ms at the top of that range. Otherwise, the Equator D5s are only $300 new and are really good for the price.

Yamaha HS-50 then, they are cheaper. And sound pretty amazing in my opinion. But doesnt mean the stuff you mix on them will sound good all things.

Seriously...if at all possible, stretch the budget a little more or save a bit longer and get the hs80 pair. They're fantastic

The rockits are the most hated monitor on the web, yet more people seem to buy them than any other cheaper brand. I sold monitors for 3 years and people would come in set on buying the hs50s or hs80s and listen with there cd collection and most of the time leave with the rockits. I don't exactly know why because the whole time I wished I had bought the hs80s and I read on the net that the rockits suck. Now I changed monitors and I still have trouble mixing, therefor do my new speakers suck too? Maybe I just suck.

I think the rockit 5s are in the same league as the hs50s. The hs50s have no bass and the rp5s have a lot of bass for a five inch. The bass on the rp5s isn't exactly brilliant, it has a tendency to make everything sound the same, but at least it has some bass. That would be much better for listening to music imo. I think there is no contest between the RP8s and the hs80s, take the hs80s if you can. I bought some Event 20/20s about 6 months ago for almost $400 cheaper than the hs80s and I'm really happy with them. 7 inch speakers, reasonably flat, the only thing near there price that I would prefer are the hs80s.

So basically I think the rockit series are decent speakers, and compared to almost every other option in their price range they are superior. Just because the hs80s are amazing doesn't mean the rockits suck

Rokit 5s I bought a pair for 130$. Or HS80HMs I got a pair for 300$, guy wanted 350$, but i said 300$ i'll pick it up in an hour and he went for it. Look around on craigslist. There are steals left and right.

Another vote for Equator D5's on the low end of your budget, HS80's if you can swing them.

The KRKs suck because they don't translate.. you think your mixes are good until you actually listen to them on a good pair of monitors. They just mask a lot of detail and have a cloudy stereo image. Another vote for the Equator Audio D5. Feel like my mixes have gotten way better switching from KRK to D5.

Yeah, I've got KRK Rokit 5s and I must admit I can't trust them for mixing... and I feel the same towards other KRKs. I'm mixing with my Beyerdynamic DT880 headphones which I can trust 100%.

So far... I feel like there aren't really good monitors for low budget people.

I've got a pair of KRK Rokit 6s, and I like them. I've got acoustic foam under them for isolation. I will be trading in for the D5s or something along those lines.

There are plenty of cheap but good monitors, but often the room in which you use them is not acoustically clean enough. Add 250 bucks and go for an ARC system by IK multimedia. Improved a lot my mixes.
