I heard from a very reliable source that DEEP PURPLE will be at Ravinia this summer.

Not thrilled about this venue, as there is no way I would go to this without pavillion seats, which will no doubt be expensive as hell.

On the flipside, DP have been high on my list of "bands still to see" for quite some time now.

What is Ravinia?

It is a yuppie outdoor venue in snobby Highland Park, IL.

Basically, it is a huge outdoor venue where the lawn is separate from the Pavillion area. (IE - from the lawn, you can NOT see the stage). There are speakers throughout the lawn so you can hear good.

It's not a good venue if you actually want to SEE the band.
Therefore, most people on the lawn go to have a cheese and wine picnic and could not care less about the band.

I saw CHEAP TRICK there, and it was extremely frustrating, as not one person on the lawn was even aware of the fact that one of the greatest power pop bands of all time was playing live right in front of them.

Therefore, the only way I would go to this is if I got a Pavillion seat, which for this venue usually starts at $50 and up.

Typical bands for this venue are Hootie & The Blowfish, Blues Traveler, lots of classical and jazz, kids concerts, etc.

Nice venue, but not well suited for a true rock show.

In other words, it's a place that chicks LOVE. They can say "we went to a concert" despite the fact that the experience very bears little resemblance to a concert if you're on the lawn.

Yes, exactly.
It's a place where yuppies and wanna-be yuppies bring their freshly purchased picnic basket they just got to make it look like they "picnic" all the time.

Another regular appearer at Ravinia is STING, so there you go..

Needless to say, while I am stoked that Purple are touring, I am not thrilled of the venue choice. Who knows? Maybe the timing will be right and they will do Milwaukee Summerfest or something better.

Jason,

Wherever Deep Purple plays, you can expect a pricey ticket. The last time I saw them was at the Chicago Theater in 2004, and those tickets were about $70 after the Ticketbastard fees. If I were you, I would just cough up the cash and see them. They're not getting any younger, and I can't imagine them touring a hell of a lot more from this point on. Trust me, it'll be worth every penny.

Stay metal. Never rust.

Morse is worth it...just amazing. Props to one of the quickest single-bass players in Ian Paice. Ian Gillan is hit or miss, but can be stellar if he's on. Really miss Jon Lord, as he is one of my main influences as a keyboard player.

Ravinia....hmmm. Always wanted to go there with the Mrs...now here's my perfect excuse: "Honey, I finally found a show at Ravinia we can see....Deep Purple!"

I'll be going if this does happen. Saw a recent setlist and it looked pretty good. Unfortunately my favorite deep purple is the coverdale-hughes-blackmore-paice-lord line up and it does not seem those songs will be happening. But still they are playing fireball and space truckin...that's enough right there.

I've never seen Roger play a double-neck bass...

the great plus about the lawn is that you can bring in your own beer & food. A Sat night, drinking cold beer and listening to Deep Purple....... could be fun.
