Christopher Abandoned In Situ
Self released 2006
By Russell Garwood
Canadas Christopher, after five years, has finally finished recording his new album Smoke and Origination. To apologise for this long wait to his fans, he has released Abandoned In Situ, which features 13 unreleased tracks, and is available to only those on his mailing list. Of course, here at UM we dont seem to do stuff much faster, as this review has been a long while coming - I can sympathise!
The music is, as with Wer Next Projekt a mix of ethnic elements, classical composition and industrial/metal, with occasional hints of darkwave and other more accessible genres. Despite the fact this collection spans his entire recording career eight years of development - Abandoned remains cohesive, quite an achievement considering the eclecticism of the material. As ever a highlight is Christophers vocal performance, which spans octaves from the highest falsetto to deeper singing, and always proves varied and perfectly in tune. Another strength of the music is the songwriting, which manages to mix many different styles into a memorable and effective whole.
Hence, despite being a stop-gap album, Abandoned In Situ still proves a very solid self-release; catchy, varied songs, professional packaging, and obvious attention to detail are all present in abundance. For fans of the more unusual fringes of metal Christopher is well worth checking out, and I look forward to hearing the new album.
