I think Metallica would have changed regardless; after all, CLIFF was the one throwing in all these hippie influences and shit while Lars and James were drunk off their asses screaming along with Tygers of Pan Tang. But maybe they would have evolved more gracefully. (Read: Re/Load would have sucked less.)

Pure speculation I know, but you gotta imagine what Daudi Baldrs and Hlidskalf could have been.

Perhaps Varg would have ended up in jail anyway, or Cliff would have drunk himself to death.
