I sometimes wonder how many people realize a concept album does not have to tell a story linked by all the songs. The songs must simply be linked thematically. Star One - Space Metal is an example that comes to mind.
Yeah.. but that can be hard to discern, since a lot of albums have all the songs on very similar themes. I guess concept albums are usually put together in a way where it's easy to tell, though.
My favorites are MAYH, Still Life, Prometheus, Oceanic, SFAM, and Death's Design.
Opeth - MAYH
Opeth - Still Life
EoS - Crimson
Therion - Secret of the Runes
Vehemence - God Was Created
Star One - Space Metal
Nightingale - I
Nightingale - Alive Again
Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design
maudlin of the Well - Bath
maudlin of the Well - Leaving Your Body Map
Yeah, I was thinking that myself... many people just don't know what concept albums are. They are an album with a concept behind it... as simple as that.
Here's my list of best:
November's Doom - The Knowing
The Afghan Whigs - Black Love
Ephel Duath - The Painter's Palette
Zao - Liberate te ex Inferis
Maudlin of the Well - Bath / Leaving Your Body Map
Ulver - Bergtatt
Ulver - Themes from William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
People forget that there's a difference between story albums and concept albums. MAYH is a story album, but I don't know if I'd call it a concept album. Morningrise is also a story album if you look at the lyrics. SFAM is both. The lyrics tell a story, and there's lots of recurring themes. It plays out like one song. You could call Damnation a concept album, but it tells no story, although the lyrics are somewhat connected in all songs.
What is the point about an album if the songs have no connection what so ever? I know there are albums like that, pretty much most of them are, but I've never really got the point.
