cool Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree) interview -- discusses writing, gear, recording...

Just coming back to say, that was the best interview I have ever read, and everyone in this forum should read this. That is all.

Agreed 100%!

It's nice to hear a musician brutally honest about himself and staying true to what he likes and represents and not giving into what's "popular".

Steve seems like such a humble down-to-earth guy. I mean, he even references loving the sound of extreme metal records, without actually liking the record itself... it's nice to hear that even he can appreciate nuances in music even if it's a particular style he's not that fond of.

This was a great interview. My respect for Steve now is a lot higher than it was prior to reading this. Call me shallow or dumb I guess. Whatev. LOL.

I'm with you, I am now officially a huge fan of this guy and will now search out and buy his other project's albums, starting with Bass Communion (the way he described his love for drone music just made me need these albums)

I recently went on a Porcupine Tree spending spree about a month ago and purchased the rest of their albums. I love them all, and each one offers something different.

May I also recommend his No-man and Backfield projects as well -- both are amazing!

I've never heard Bass Communion, but now I'm gonna definitely check out more work by them, Robert Fripp and King Crimson as well. :D

EDIT: Steve's solo album Insurgentes is really good too.

thanks for sharing this! really cool interview.. its semm like he hate shredders haha :D

I don't think he hates shredders. I think he just wants to let people know that it's OK to like music that isn't going at 320 bpm all the time. Sometimes simpler is better. I have a feeling a lot of young guitarists are growing up with the idea that you suck if you can't shred like paul gilbert, or yngwie, or petrucci, etc. I used to be in this mindset, but then I woke up and wondered what the fuck I was doing and why it even mattered. The point was music is what I was after, not exercising.

This is one of the big reasons why I like listening to modern guitarists and bands like Zakk Wylde or Opeth... you get some really heavy stuff, but also get to hear some really cool simple pentatonic soloing without having to hear Rusty Cooley type pyrotechnic finger exercises being passed off as a solo. I'd much prefer players that keep it simple and play notes that matter. I think that's why I really loved this interview... I was able to finally hear someone else vocalize what I've been feeling for so long.

i was just joking around dude ;) and i totally agree whit you , been there too, play fast does`t make you a beeter musician. i know that every guitarrist is diferent and have their owns ways of expressing music. but also i know there are more guitarrist triying to be the new " shredeer sensation" that people like steve making interisting music

No worries... i kinda figured you were joking. And yes I agree.

Awesome, thanks for posting. While I definitely have my favorites, I can honestly say I like every record he's been involved with.

You're welcome! I knew a thread like this would bring you out of the woodworks here. :p
