The band, Cult of Luna seems to be getting high praise in a number of circles. I began looking for info on their music. After hearing an MP3 from their latest CD, I was curious to learn if they are an artist whose music The End Records typically stocks. Sure enough, they are. In The End's description of the band, they refer to their music as "Apocalyptic Noisecore". Apocalyptic Noisecore? That's friggin awesome. Definitely the coolest desription I've ever read.

If you're interested, you can hear an MP3 at:

Very cool stuff indeed.

The term "apocalyptic noisecore" came from Neurosis many years ago. Cult of Luna is good, but they really need to step away from the strong Neurosis influences and get more of a style of their own. With that said, they do have one of the best releases of the year. It's on Earache.

Cult of Luna is good, but like npearce said, they need to step out of Neurosis' overwhelming shadow.

They're not exactly bad, but I have about a trillion other albums to purchase before I'd bother. Also, they look funny live with short hair and three-piece drumkit and all.

If the genre name has 'noise' or 'core' in it, I immediately cringe (and generally want nothing to do with the music). Put them together? And add apocalyptic to make it sound cool? Crikey! Count me out... :)

I always thought the name, 'porn-core', was pretty cool. And 'gore-core'. Thing is, it gets all so confusing and so most people just tend to think of it all as 'shit-core'.

well people commonly assume that any genre with "core" in its title has an association with hardcore, so they automatically think "OMG'S THEY'RE LIKE SICK OF IT ALL!!!! LOLERZ", which couldn't be more ignorant. Grindcore has nothing to do with hardcore. Unless you think early Carcass sounds like 25 Ta Life.

I think the coolest genre name has to be the one I invented for one of my older bands - African American Communist Vomit Metal

I wanna form a band and label us as Sweat Metal.

Oh yeah, and Gay Punk is probably my favorite genre name. There are punk groups that actually take the time out there to sound gay, and call their music as such. That is hysterical.

It may sound ridiculous, especially to those skeptical concerning the "-core" genres (count me in), but at least the words apocalyptic noisecore makes sense and fits the punishing atmosphere, unlike some of the others listed here...but isn't that the point of this thread? Or is my lack of -core knowledge showing?

...speaking of... you know what i hate ?
all those promos i used to get in the mail, some unknown bands that printed out an info page, and they would write something stupid like :

"we play progressive black metal with melodic death guitars, some doom touches, and alot of thrash influences, we also play brutal core, grind, and we combine the atmospheric gothic metal together with folk music"

uh... yeah.

yeah we get a lot of stuff like that too... one was at least a paragraph long of genre description.

needless to say, the cd wasn't very original
