CREED singer Scott Stapp says that he "can't confirm or deny" that he is working on a new project with members of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. During an interview this morning (Monday, May 2) on the "Bailey And Southside" show on the Rock 100.5 radio station, Stapp said (hear audio below): "[I've] been working on a new album with a new group of guys — guys from some pretty well-known rock bands that you guys will know. I can't really share the details about it, but there's a lot of good things going on, man, and I'm excited about it." After being pressed to share more details about the project, Stapp responded: "I can't tell you 'till later in June, man. [That's when] we'll be making the announcement." He did, however, offer the following hint about his new bandmates' identities: "This other band that I'm jamming with is its own band with its own band name." Asked point blank if he got the gig as the new lead singer of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, Stapp said: "I can't say, man, I can't say. I can't confirm or deny. [But] I will tell you this: there is a six-degree-separation connection between this new project and the band you mentioned." Stapp went through a highly publicized, drug-inflamed meltdown in 2014, after which he entered into an intensive rehab program and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition that causes unexpected shifts in mood, energy and activity levels. Stapp also lost custody of his three children during this period, while also missing a court hearing and allegedly threatening to kill President Obama. Stapp is now sober and in intensive therapy. He takes medication for bipolar disorder, works through a 12-step program, and meets with a sponsor, saying, "Nothing is more important than my sobriety." STP recently held open submissions for a new vocalist after singer Chester Bennington exited the lineup in 2015 to focus on his other band, LINKIN PARK. Scott Weiland, whom STP parted ways with in 2002 and again in 2013, died last December, dashing any hopes that the band might reunite again with him.
