Curious Obama continues to hispander; "Your kids NEED to learn Spanish"

I have more of a problem with the people who speak it, than the language itself. These motherfuckers encroach upon our civilization with their vile habits from the favelas of Guerrero, not putting forth one trickle of effort towards acclimating to our culture. And by culture I'm referring to the English fucking language. Keep your quinceaneras y tu futbol, but atleast have the respect to be able to take your D.M.V. test in the national language. Our literacy rate lowers every time one of these heinas whips out another urban terrorist to be. Onigma shouldn't be encouraging these mojados to sit still in their own languidness as they wait for all of society to adjust to their needs. Frankly, I'm sick of going to an atm and having to go through a language prompt just to pull out $20 shekels.

Moral of the story - Americans shouldn't bother to learn a second language, until they've mastered the first one.

Personally, I think it's embarrassing that we're the only industrialized nation whose population only knows one language. I can't tell you how many times I traveled and ended up in a conversation with a group of folks, from various places around the globe, where we're all conversing in English. And I think to myself, what a bunch of dolts we are. I wish I was forced to take Spanish from 1st Grade on, when it's much easier to learn a language. In so many ways, we need to get off our collective high horse and stop believing the world should just concede to our every wish.

That said, I believe immigrants, wishing to establish citizenship, you should be required to pass an English test.

So, on this issue, I'm in complete agreement with Obama. And while I don't think he's a perfect candidate, and certainly not my first choice, he's still a better option than McCain by light years.

Zod

High Schoolers are already asked to take two years of a foreign language elective. Whether they are able to learn anything from it is up to them. Now if Onigma had stated, "Americans need to master the English language and broaden their linguistic scope with knowledge of other foreign languages", then I'd stand up, applaud, and throw a golden banana his way.

Universal Health Care
Continued Welfare Benefits
Spanish as the National Language
Open Borders
Section 8 for Urban Terrorists

Fuck, I could have swore that we kicked Mexico's ass 150 yrs ago?!?!

It's one thing to encourage Americans to learn a foreign language in an effort to simply increase our knowledge base and awareness of our world, it's another thing to encourage Americans to learn Spanish in order to communicate with our gardeners, our house builders and those who use EMTALA without remorse. Learning Arabic, Chinese, or French is a mark of intelligence. Learning Spanish is an error in judgement.

I actually agree on this one, even though I'm for Obama. And btw, after almost 7 years of Spanish, I'm not taking it anymore, with plans to take Arabic sometime in the near future.

Spanish isn't a fun language.

this is ridiculous, french? are you serious? dorian, this is the stupidest thing you've ever written. the rest of our hemisphere speaks spanish and you think french is a better choice? immigration, whether legal or otherwise is not going to go away, ever, no matter what, as long as there is such a drastic economic imbalance between the US and mexico/central america--thanks to international capitalism, might we bear in mind. they will keep coming, and your solution is what, to pretend they don't exist? and maybe they'll go away? let me tell you dude, the chickens are coming home to roost and it is because of utterly unsustainable economic practices--latin america didn't arrive in such dire economic straits in a fucking vacuum, and as consumers we are all complicit. the US government does everything they can not to prevent immigrants from entering the country, which is clearly not possible, but to ensure they are kept firmly at heel as a permanent economic underclass. should this be america? i believe learning a foreign language, any foreign language, at a young age is instrumental in developing one's mind and worldview. now arabic, chinese, these are also fine languages to learn considering the current geopolitical climate. but to deny spanish at least equal consideration is to bury one's head firmly up one's ass given that the "first" and "third" worlds, once separated by the interests of capitalism, are being rapidly driven together by the same market forces--and the spanish-speaking population of the US *will* continue to explode while so many people in our backyard find themselves at the mercy of "first-world" economic policy. this isn't "their problem", it's our problem, and learning a language is not merely reading a dictionary, it's a tool for cultural understanding. to deny its importance is not only foolhardy but dangerous.
