As some of you are probably already aware, the new Current 93 album is going to be released in mid-May. Definately one of the best releases to come out this year. There are quite a number of guest vocalists and musicians, as usual for C93, and as always the music is extremely stirring in an almost indescribable way. The music is for the most part is in an evolved folk-noir style that they have been building on ever since the late 80s, and in my opinion, I would say that Black Ships Ate The Sky is on par with their old masterpieces such as Swastikas For Goddy, Imperium, Thunder Perfect Mind and All The Pretty Little Horses.

...and here are lots and lots of samples:

Here is the single that was released last summer.

And Jnana Records has the following samples:
Idumæa (vocals: Marc Almond)
Sunset (The Death of Thumbelina)
Then Kill Cæsar
Idumæa (vocals: Bonnie 'Prince' Billy)
The Dissolution of the Boat 'Millions of Years'
Idumæa (vocals: Antony)
Black Ships Seen Last Year South of Heaven
Idumæa (vocals: Pantaleimon)
Vau Vau Vau (Black Ships in their Harbours)

top 5 (2006) material for sure.

TPM is essential. To be honest, I have hypnagogue I/II but haven't even gotten around to listening yet, since I bought it at the same time I got Sleep Has His House, which caused me to overlook the other.

and as for Black Ships, imo it's flawless. While it doesn't reach the emotional peak that I get from, for example, All The Pretty Little Horses (like that moment right when the Nick Cave tune suddenly awakens from the haze), I attribute this to the older albums having their weak moments, which make the crescendo into blissfullness that much more stirring. Black Ships is at a peak throughout, which really limits this ceiling room for that intense emotional moment, but it's this consistant quality that makes this album so utterly immense.

Also, I still don't like Swastikas for Goddy, but replace up there with Of Ruinne Or Some Blazing Starre and then you have a quality listing of masterpieces.

I just downloaded this of our friendly neighborhood ftp. Fucking beautiful so far. What a voice!

edit: whoa, seriously, this is incredible!

Swastikas for Goddy is weird. Extremely dark in material (I mean, (hey ho) the goddy (oh), or Stair Song / Hello Angel "That which is falling should also be pushed, that which is crawling should also be crushed" / Since Yesterday and the Boyd Rice monologues... it's just really fucking disturbing.

I agree, I also think that it's also their "easiest" album to get into, so it's a great starting point.
