Holy hell! Watch out for this one. As a fan of both Justin Broadrick and Ipecac Records, I was drooling when I heard about this project. While ‘Mass Destruction’ is not their first outing, it is their first on Ipecac Records. Curse of the Golden Vampire combines two of experimental music’s more insanely creative minds, Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, ex-Napalm Death, etc.) and Kevin Martin (God, Techno Animal, etc.).

So what’s this insane duo sound like? Well . . . uh . . . hmmm . . . as James Plotkin once told me regarding the process he used to create his insane project, Phantomsmasher, “Cut paste, slat.” Or something like that. Curse definitely has similarities to Phantomsmasher in that it uses modern digital manipulation to achieve an even more extreme (and noisy) tirade of musical terrorism. However, Curse moves more in the direction of metal than Phantomsmasher has. With Justin Broadrick on guitar, I can’t help but notice the Godflesh and early Napalm Death influences throughout. Thick, churning guitars and crushing beats dominate at times . . . but then the technoise aspect of the music comes into play.

If you’ve heard Godflesh ‘Us and Them’, you will know that Justin Broadrick has a great ear for drum-n-bass assassination techniques. Curse uses pretty much every tool they have at their disposal to manipulate guitars, drums, bass, and vocals in a way that can only be described as extreme. Occasional glimpses of drum-n-bass madness and even a little trip-hop are absolutely splattered all over the floor by the blood-curdling screams and digital manipulation throughout this recording.

I really don’t know what to say about this. It’s absolute madness in the form of digital hardcore. It’s genius in the form of extreme metal. It’s one of the best albums of the year. Terribly extreme, but well worth the many listens you will need to give it.
