Hi, all. Bringing you some cymbal essentials! I sampled some Mike Skiba (gone to rest, unfortunately, he did great work!) custom made 13.5inch Hi-Hats, with the top cymbal weighing in at 1145 grams and the bottom at 1215 grams; also a Zildjian K Custom 20inch ride cymbal weighing in at 1975 grams. Recorded in 16bit, 44.1K stereo .WAV files, with the following articulations - for the hats: closed tip and shank, open tip and shank, pedal close, and foot-splash; for the ride: bell, bow, wash and edge (the bow and wash samples are meant to be layered together to create different velocity strokes). Each was miced with a Sennheiser 421 close mic, and as overheads, Neumann KM 84s in an x-y position as close as I could get to my head, to best approximate the sound the drummer hears from his perspective. I'd love to hear any mixes you guys choose to use these samples in. Feedback is welcome. Hope you all enjoy and please let me know what you think!

If anyone is willing to make TCIs, I'd appreciate it. These samples can also be found at www.freesound.org - I encourage you to browse that site for other samples and sample sets I've created.

Thanks so much for this great forum, I look forward to your comments. :heh:

Thanks for the kind words, brothers!!! Would be very interested to hear someone's mix utilizing these samples, so I'm prayig this thread lasts that long. It's nice to see how alll the little elements come together to create a track. Anybody want to take a first shot?! :worship:

WOW!!! That hi-hat!
I have some work to do and selling some gear and guitar too, to get new descent guitar, and than I'll do my records using these samples.
You are awesome dude!

how do you guys use those hi-hats samples? i am working with SD 2, and i use app trigga to trigger snare and kick. (i just use multichannel out from SD 2). but hats always seemes to complicated, because they have some many different sounds and states...

I do not mean to sound unthankful or so, but how is one supposed to use these samples in a mix?
Multisamples would be essential for every piece of the drumkit, but especially for hihat and ride.

They sound nice, but I don't see a huge use for them...maybe the bell of the ride for a small accent or something, but other than that they arent very usefull...at least in a metal context.

With enough variations in velocity, a multisample is unnecessary, IMO. So start with the original track and make sure there is enough variation in it to make the new samples sound natural. The ride samples are meant to be blended together to create different velocity hits. The samples are only as good as the initial track. Thanks everyone for the praise and feedback! :heh:

machine gun anyone?

Seems you don't want your drums to sound natural, sooooo
nothing to do here for me.
have fun with those samples^^

Not at all... with careful layering of the Bow and Wash samples, as well as EQ, you can produce quite a bit of variation even though they're not multisamples. Besides, in metal tracks, you generally only use two or three multisamples of, for example, kicks. It'll still sound moderately human.

I just uploaded a new version of the Zildjian ride (old links will work for the new downloads). I did a bit of EQ to get rid of some annoying bass overtones and make the bell more pingy than clangy. Check 'em out!

Cheers,
