D&D 4th Edition

I wouldn't mind playing D&D again. There are parts of it I loved doing. But I no longer have a group to play with like I did when I was growing up. This edition looks interesting primarily because it deals with a number of my frustrations that I've had with the system since the original D&D. I mostly played second edition though, and only played 3rd edition once. My cleric was badass.

really now?

we should talk. :heh:

oh, and check the video presentations on the WotC page and you'll eventually note that they're making the game playable through the internet. So your 'group' will not have to be sitting at the same table any longer.

and that rocks!

I may get there again soon enough - my boy (almost 7) is big on Yugiho (or however you spell it!) so I am having to learn this game in order to play with him!

Magic and D&D will come soon enough I imagine... haha.

I'm just hoping .. praying even .. that the art is better this time around. It's hard for me to read through my core books with 3rd Edition's childish illustrations :erk:

I always hated that look they went with for the art in 3e too.

I don't know what to think about this. It seems like a good idea, but then again, it takes a lot of the imagination out of it. I also think that any time you put something like this into a computer program, you are putting in inherent limitations. Who knows though.

I haven't played D&D and ages. It was fun with the right people and lots of alcohol.

I didn't like the people I played 3rd edition with. One guy nearly ate a whole huge bag of cheese puffs. Okay that was mostly the worst. That and his minitures infatuation. I like minatures at times. But he brought his collection to show them off, not to use them. I mean WTF? I just had a few beers, and sat back and had fun with the campaign though. I think it was a prebought one. Which is cool. Never done one so.. detailed. The DM (the guy who was dating my roommate... thus the reason I went) did a good job.

I'm a geek/nerd. I know it. But I'm not like most guys. I have a hard time hanging with guys because of it. Hard to explain I gues.

I played D&D for the same reason I still would enjoy doing it. I played because I love to envision myself in another place doing other things. I don't know. The more 'online' friendliness definitely entices me.

Now if only White Wolf would do it. I love vampire/werewolf.... but I'm no goth and thus don't fit in with most who play.

So anyhow online should allow me to enjoy the game ... moreso perhaps. I'll check it out.

In fairness...the original crowd playing White Wolf products was mostly made up of goths. I originally met violin virtuoso Paul Mercer (whose work everyone should check out) through Vampire LARP. Unfortunately, a lot of gamers started seeing "Vampire" as the game "the cool people played," and started playing, despite a lack of interest in vampire literature or gothic music. This coincided (hmmm...) with the spike in people who thought they were goths but listened to nu-metal and Marilyn Manson. Many of these people were vocal about "hating Anne Rice," which makes one wonder why they would even bother playing a game heavily indebted to her work (I've always suspected it was unspoken homophobia, and they were too insecure to enjoy a book series whose hero was obviously bisexual). Since many of these people didn't read vampire fiction or watch vampire films, their closest correlation was the "Highlander" franchise. Enter: Highlander-ninjas in dusters. Who also happened to be vampires.

Eventually the goths left, and others remained. The coolness factor of vampires crumbled, and the mainstream entertainment biz started appealing to this new mindset, e.g. "The Queen of the Damned" movie (ironically, loosely based on Rice's work).

Not that I really blame White Wolf. Most of their actual books were ok I suppose, and I find it funny that a lot of the gamers hate their newer books - which force players to create characters and utilize atmosphere, instead of creating Highlander-style power fantasies.

Yeah, I'm bitter. It blows to see something near and dear to ones heart ruined.

I used to go to GenCon regularly. I watched some White Wolf LARPing. Always looked like great fun, but I never was able to get into it. Found a group once who did it,but just never did.

But thanks for the writeup =)

My best werewolf sessions were when our storyteller used to live in Russia and went through all the military training. He was able to pull a lot from that. Plus the guy was like a young Zangief. hehe.

BTW, I am not slamming all gamers, I've known many throughout my lifetime, some quite cool and well-adjusted. I'm just bitter about the ones who thought they would "jump someone else's train" and wound up causing it to derail.

White Wolf's made a few publishing and style blunders down through the years, but I remember the original Vampire books and promo materials were drop-dead gorgeous.

Of course, they did actually pay me for my story here. :)

As for D&D, I never actually played it 'for realm' but had a lot of friends who did. I was more of a Traveller guy back in school. :)

Oh yeah, when White Wolf is on, I think they put out some truly class products. And I think that their current WoD materials are on - even if I don't plan on buying them, looking at them shows that they have gone back to a more atmospheric flavor. The proof of their success in my eyes? Angry mutterings from people who favor Highlander-ninjas in dusters.

Wasn't White Wolf bought by CDP games the makers of the SCI-FI mmorpg Eve Online?

I think they said something about making a Vampire: The Masquerade MMORPG a while back.

Dammit. Now I have to learn a new system for D&D. Just as I got used to 2e, they came out with 3e. THEN they were like "Oh, wait..." and released 3.5e. More money down the drain.

Well screw that. If I ever find a gaming group, I'll just leech off of someone else's PHB, et al.

However, I AM excited about the Chronicles movie. Sturm Brightblade for the win!

As for the White Wolf games: Malk clan pride!

What Chronicles movie?

I know there was talk about a Cartoon for Dragonlance with Lucy Lawless doing the voice of Goldmoon but I have not heard much more about it ever since it was announced.

Don't tell me they are making a live action movie now?
